Asthma or bronchitis? Symptoms are coughing with no mucus, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, gasping for air. Took albuteral and it works.
Ventolin is the trade name for the chemical / drug albuterol. This drug is a medicine to be inhaled to open the airways and it acts quickly, so it is called a "short-acting bronchodilator". The medicine comes in both a hand-held inhaler and as a liquid to be used with a nebulizer machine . It also comes in a liquid form to take by mouth, but this should not be used ...Read more

See below: You have a cold. I recommend an over the counter decongestant either phenylephrine nose drops or spray or pseudephedrine tablets (the ones locked up behind the counter). Use them for only 3-4 days to avoid rebound phenomenon. You could also take tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain relief and throat lozenges if sore throat. Take Robitussin-DM for cough. Keep yourself well hydrated and you should get better soon. ...Read more

Cold or more??: If it just a cold, usually there are evident signs of respiratory distress. Those are rapid breathing (more than 24 x/min); nasal flaring;?; chest retractions; and use of the accessory muscles of respiration. If none of thes are present the cough is much more likely to originate at the pharyngeal level. An excellent med for type of cough is benzonatate. ...Read more

Both: A cold is an upper respiratory infection. Acute bronchitis is also an upper respiratory infection. I would say you have both: acute bronchitis caused by a cold. The risk is that you may have a LOWER respiratory infection (i.e. pneumonia) - the fever is the worrisome sign. You need to be seen by your doctor ASAP. Sometimes antibiotics really are needed! ...Read more

Do i need a prescription to buy sterile saline for a nebulizer? Will it work to break up chest congestion? Cough, not wheezing-don't need albuterol.
Not really: Well, looks like you've got the albuterol in case you need it. Keep in mind that sometimes the body's response to inflammed airways is a cough, so albuterol may help that as well. Sterile saline is available at any corner drug store, wal-mart, target, etc. In fact, many wound washes you find in the first-aid section are just sterile saline. Just read the bottle. Good luck, and see your doctor! ...Read more

Sudden chest tightness, rapid hr, reflux, nasal congestion & trouble breathing. Albuterol helped. Lung infection 5 wks ago. Could this be asthma?
Mgt: It may be that the illness predisposed you to bronchospasm, which the Albuterol relieved. If you have a family history of asthma, this increases your likelihood of asthma. If you have recurrent wheezing, please see a specialist or your PCP . A virtual consultation may be useful to you and your PCP. ...Read more
