Ventolin (Definition)

Ventolin is the trade name for the chemical / drug albuterol. This drug is a medicine to be inhaled to open the airways and it acts quickly, so it is called a "short-acting bronchodilator". The medicine comes in both a hand-held inhaler and as a liquid to be used with a nebulizer machine. It also comes in a liquid form to take by mouth, but this should not be used ...Read more

Will an albuterol breathing treatment make my child excited and jittery?

Help! Breathing treatment of Albuterol, Decadron and Antivert (meclizine) almost 12 hours ago. Then shot of Methylpred right after. When is pulse going down???

A day or two?: All of these medications can increase your pulse rate. If you have received Decadron shot plus Methylpred shots, the duration of the pulse rate increase is dependent on the total dose. Were you not on Toprol, (metoprolol) the pulse would likely have gone even higher. ...Read more

My 5 y/o she is taking omnicef (cefdinir) 125/5 sus & breathing treatments of albuterol. She has been complaining of pain in lower right abdomen. Related?

What is the rattle noise upon exhaling when my toddler has a respiratory infection? Should I continue the albuterol breathing treatments?

What is the rattle noise upon exhaling when my toddler has a respiratory infection? Should I continue the albuterol breathing treatments?

Rattle noise exhalin: I think what you are describing is wheezing and your pediatrician has prescribed Albuterol Inhalation for it. Did you ask the doc if your child has asthma and if it is, you need to get educated to take care of your child. Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the bronchi and you need proper treatment with inhaled steroids and albuterol, unless he is being treated for bronchiolitis. ...Read more

Budesonide inhalation suspension 0.5 mg or albuterol sulfate 2.5mg. I have chronic bronchitis and I have both of these for my "at home" breathing treatments. Which would help most?

Depends: The two meds you list are very different and intended for different purposes. Budesonide (pulmicort) is a steroid to reduce inflammation where as albuterol is a smooth muscle relaxer designed to reduce bronchospasm of the smaller airways surrounded by smooth muscle fibers. Albuterol's effect is very brief and temporary. Budesonide use provides sustained beneficial effects to prevent flare up. ...Read more

Yesterday I started 40 mg prednisone avelox 400mg and albuterol breathing treatments. I'm still wheezing when I push out an exhale. Is this normal?

Maybe: A bacterial process can take 2-3 days to show improvement w/antibiotics. If you are still wheezing, you may need the albuterol more frequently. If you are not comfortable at rest, you may need to go to er. Otherwise, vaporizer/humidifier may help + usual cold medicines for symptom relief. ...Read more

What can a person on beta blockers do for chest wheeze, cough, phlegm when albuterol breathing treatments are contraindicated? How to clear out lungs?

Alternative: I don't know the contraindication to albuterol but there is Levalbuterol as alternative. In addition, an inhaled steroid is usually indicated for chronic lung problems. Revisit your bblocker as there are also more selective ones that don't induce bronchospasm. Talk to your doctor about these. And definitely try to see if you can get cough meds. Cough can induce wheezing. Good luck. ...Read more

Is abuterol safe to give with this type of Mucinex medicine? Will breathing treatments be beneficial at this point? Treating my daughter with mucinex- cough, cold & sore throat medicine since yesterday (2/17/12). Her cough was tight and is now breaking-up

Is abuterol safe to give with this type of Mucinex medicine? Will breathing treatments be beneficial at this point? Treating my daughter with mucinex- cough, cold & sore throat medicine since yesterday (2/17/12). Her cough was tight and is now breaking-up

Number: Number one question one must ask is what is your daughter`s diagnosis. If she has asthma she needs to be on maintenance medication instead of just albuterol (albuterol is considered a rescue medication in inhaler or nebulizer form and is not a substitute for controller medication). Mucinex (guaifenesin) may or may not help depending on underlying reasons for her cough, exacerbating/aggravating factors for her cough and underlying diagnosis. ...Read more

What should be given first? A nebulizer treatment (albuterol) or advair?

Rescue/maintenance: Albuterol is a rescue medication (unless used before exertion) and it's frequency of use dictates the status of ones airways. Ideally albuterol should be used rarely if at all but that is not always the case.
Advair is a daily maintenance medication. It's use should in theory reduce or eliminate the need for the use of a rescue medication (eg albuterol). If both are needed albuterol is first. ...Read more

I have asthma and copd, I use a nebulizer for treatment along with the albuterol sulfate solution. Is there a better solution to use to help me?

Proper treatment: In my opinion, contrary to others, these conditions should always be treated with inhaled steroid first and then add. This prevents inflammation and twitchy airways. In COPD there is bowing of midsize airways due to tissue destruction. This is helped with anticholinergics (thiotropium or ipratropium) this allows the rescue albuterol to get into the distal airways for rescue, more mainstay in asthm. ...Read more

6 yo has bronchitis. Just gave him albuterol in nebulizer and his cough is really bad after treatment. It sounds productive though. Is this normal?

It is normal to: cough more right after a nebulization treatment. The medication loosens up the mucous in the airway passages. However, if he is wheezing more or having difficulty breathing, or he seems to need a treatment in less than 2 hours, you should call his pediatrician. He may need to be re-checked and/or his medications adjusted. ...Read more

Cough variant asthma: Is type of asthma where cough is the most salient symptom, dry cough, but still have other asthma signs, at times it might be the only symptom and hard to diagnose. As for the albuterol form: whichever works, so long it is taken in the right way and produces the desired effect, but albuterol is just a quick fix, you need comprehensive treatment as any other asthmatic, see an allergist/pulmonol ...Read more
