Albumin (Definition)

Albumins are proteins which dissolve in water and are not covered with chains of sugars. The most common is serum albumin. These molecules transport other molecules which don't dissolve in water very well. But its main function is to regulate the amount of water in the blood. Another type of Albumin is the ...Read more

TSH is WAY high!: Must get on a higher dose of synthroid (thyroxine). This can be life threatening, get treated asap, ! other thyroid tests need to be done to know what needs to be done, and to come to a diagnosis. ...Read more

Protein Total Serum 8.7 Globulin Serum 4.20 Albumin/ Globulin Ratio 1.07 ALP 132 Urea/ CreatinineRatio 18.54 rest normal . Any worries here ?

Need more info.: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, there is no immediate concern, however, your globulin level may be higher than normal and you should discuss it with the doctor who ordered the tests. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

Globulin level: 4.5, Albumin level: 3.9, Total Protein: 8.4, Albumin/Globulin Ratio: 0.9, AST: 68, ALT: 105. What do these levels mean?

Need med history: You need to tell us why was this test done. Did you have some complaints? Once we know your symtoms, if any, it is easier to interpret your lab results. Your liver enzymes are slightly high and so is the globulin level which can occur due to liver problems like Hepatitis. Total protein 7.9 albumin 3.7 globulin 4.2. And albumin/globulin ratio is 0.9. Is this concerning?

Generically not prob: Overall this is not a problem. Typically you want your Albumin a little higher so it would be helpful to know if you are dieting or have a good amount of protein in your meals. Ratio should be about 1. ...Read more

What causes high globulin, but low globulin albumin ratio?

Liver blood tests: The liver is an amazing organ- it does many things including making proteins your body needs. Albumin is a major protein product of the liver. Chronic illness can cause that to decline- esp. if you're not eating. Globulins are other proteins usually made to fight diseases like infections- perhaps you've been fighting an illness for a few weeks/months that explain this pattern. ...Read more

What condition(s) causes someone to have high total serum protein, high albumin, normal globulin and high total calcium levels?

What condition(s) causes someone to have high total serum protein, high albumin, normal globulin and high total calcium levels?

Dehydration.: There are no diseases that specifically increase albumin. Therefore in order to get an elevated concentration there must be a decrease in the amount of water in the system. This would also account for the normal globulin. Calcium is bound to Albumin so that elevated Albumin will elevate your calcium levels as well. ...Read more

What causes high glucose serum, calcium serum, albumin serum, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol calc, vitamin b12, but low sed rate westergren?

Means nothing alone: As a pathologist who's devoted a lifetime to lab medicine, my teammates and i are always reminding people that lab results mean nothing whatever in the absence of a history & physical exam. Please don't take this the wrong way, and i appreciate your proactive approach to health. But no one can do anything with this. Ask instead, "could high Albumin out-of-range be from dehydration?" etc. ...Read more

Labs show serum albumin 3.9 (ref. Range 3.5-5.5)and globulin at 1.9 range (1.5-4.5) but says total serum protein low at 5.8 range(6.0-8.5) what gives?

Probably nothing.: Total protein consists of the sum of the globulin proteins and albumin. Since the individual values for globulin and Albumin are normal, it is questionable that there is anything wrong. This may just be normal for you. ...Read more

'serum iron level' 26umol/l. 'saturation of iron binding cap '50%. %iron saturation 52%. 'serum ferritin level' 40ng /ml. What does it all mean.?

Normal iron status: The serum iron test measures iron in blood. Iron is bound to proteins in blood (mainly transferrin), so the % sat is proportion of iron binding proteins that carry iron. Ferritin is the amount of iron in reserve stores. In iron deficiency, iron and ferritin are low, transferrin is high, and % sat is low. ...Read more
