My friend has a head cold and chest congestion. He has g6pd. What OTC decongestants are safe for him to take?

OTC medications are: Heavily marketed to the public, but data suggests they do little if anything to alter the course of illnesses they are marketed toward. Some symptomatic relief may be achieved, but is generally short-lived. A more effective approach, with no risk to a g6pd patient, are the old standbys, rest, hydration, humidified air and time. This said, most otc meds are low risk. See g6pd. Org for specifics. ...Read more

Can G6PD deficient kids under 5 take multi vitamin supplements? Are all vitamins safe for such kids?

Can G6PD deficient kids under 5 take multi vitamin supplements? Are all vitamins safe for such kids?

Standard types safe: The standard types of multi-vitamins or multi-vitamins plus minerals are as safe for children with G6PD deficiency as they are for non-G6PD-deficient children. If unusual, non-standard doses are used, then nobody really knows how safe or unsafe those supplements would be. Thus, one should stick with standard dosing and reputable brands. ...Read more

Is tiki tiki safe for g6pd?

Would not recommend: In trying to determine what is in "tiki-tiki", I have run across a number of g6pd forums asking a similar question and the consensus is not safe for g6pd. I do not know why you want to take tiki-tiki (or give tiki-tiki to your child), but I would say the risk/benefit ratio favors staying away from it if you have g6pd. A hemolytic crisis is not worth it. Find something else instead of tiki-tiki. ...Read more

My son has g6pd. What exactly is it and what precautions should his father and I take?

Get Tested: G6pd is a genetic disorder located on the x-chromosome. There are a large number of variants of this disorder. You should talk to your doctor about getting tested (or talk to a geneticist) to know your carrier status and to identify which variant you may have. In likelihood, one of you is a carrier (most likely the mother; since I am presuming the father has no symptoms). ...Read more

What are the baby foods safe to feed a g6pd deficiency baby?

What are the baby foods safe to feed a g6pd deficiency baby?

Most are safe: From the time when babies are sitting to when they walk is a marvelous opportunity to introduce many flavors of foods (www. Drgreene. Com/colorin). Kids with g6pd deficiency should avoid fava beans. Some kids - depending on their variant - should also avoid blueberries (& yogurts containing them), soy, other legumes, some chinese herbs, or tonic water (not great for babies anyway). I love g6pd. If I am a beta thalassemia carrier female is it safe to have kids with a G6PD male?

If I am a beta thalassemia carrier female is it safe to have kids with a G6PD male?

Avoid 2 bad genes: One way to avoid having a child who inherited a bad trait, is to make sure that NOT both parents carry genes for that bad trait. So, a woman carrying a thalassemia gene (beta mutations are on chromosome 16, or alpha on 11) wants to marry a man with NO thalassemia mutations. Likewise, a man with G6PD (on chromosome X) wants to marry a woman with no G6PD. A doctor can check both the man and woman. ...Read more

Can a patient with G6PD defiency take ASA and if not why?

Probably: G6-PD deficiency is a genetic disorder caused by a lack of a protective enzyme in red blood cells. Most people with the disorder have episodes of hemolysis (RBC damage) caused by oxidative drugs or infection. More rare Class I variants have chronic hemolysis. Outside of Class I, aspirin, which used to be considered risky now is considered safe when used in low doses. ...Read more

I got severe g6pd deficiency. Can I take Amoxil?

I got severe g6pd deficiency. Can I take Amoxil?

Can ask one's doctor: The usual worry is that patients with G6PD deficiency have a higher rate of breakage of their red blood cells if their bodies are undergoing a stressful event, thus leading to jaundice (pigments from broken red blood cells cause the jaundice color) and anemia (related to low red blood cell count). Haven't heard of amoxicillin or penicillin causing increased problems in G6PD-deficient patients. ...Read more

Hi! . my baby is now 5 months old and she is g6pd. What milk formula is safe for her? .... Is cerelac flavoured wheat, banana and milk are safe for her? ..

Ok to start solids: It is ok to start cereal by 4-6 months, but because wheat allergy is common, rice or oatmeal is usually recommended as a first cereal. The type with added fruit and milk is ok. Continue the same infant formula until your child is close to a year old. To give variety, add a different vegetable to the feedings once a week, unless there is a reaction, like rash or vomiting or diarrhea. ...Read more
