Referred to as aids dementia complex (also encephalopathy, neurocongnitive disorder). It is thought to be caused my activation and inflammation of the macrophage-monocyte system as well as microglia. Neurotoxins are secreted and cause widespread damage. Damaging speech changes occur along with degeneration motor neurons and most importantly cognitive impairment ensues.

Is contracting and living with Lewy bodies dementia (alzheimers) terminal?

Eventually, yes: Lbd is not the same as alzheimers. However, there also is no cure, and it is progressive - either slow or rapid. So, it is terminal but an average life expectancy after DX is 5-7 yrs. The worst of it is that the symptoms are quite difficult to manage and few families can avoid residential care. Is Alzheimer's or dementia hereditary?

Yes to some degree: 60% of all pts with Alzheimer's Disease have first degree relative (often a parent) that had AD. There are genetic tests one called ApoE4 which can indicate you are low, medium or high risk in your life to develop this illness. I do not recommend such testing as there are no proven treatments that can slow or prevent Alzheimer's Disease from developing. Stay active mentally and physically! ...Read more

Helpful in LBD: I routinely use donepezil effectively in my lewy body disease patients. Although only 40-50% of them actually have cognitive improvements in the here & now, but we suspect it slows the progression of cognitive deterioration anecdotally.
