Herpes - HSV1 & HSV2: Yes - unfortunately there can be cross over between the 2 different types of herpes. These viruses are always adapting and looking for 'new opportunities' and although traditionally, HSV-1 kept to the mouth/nose and HSV-2 kept to the genital tract, there can be 'back and forth' transmission of these viruses in susceptible patients. Herpes cousins: Actually yes indeed. The virus that causes herpetic whitlow- usually HSV-1 (but sometimes HSV-2) is related to the same virus that causes chicken pox. We call that virus VZV or varicella zoster virus. These viruses are found in the 'herpes' family of viruses. Great observation. I hope though you're not suffering too badly from these nasty viruses. Unlikely: There is a definite association between herpes simplex type 2 and recurrent (mollaret's) meningitis, but encephalitis would be very unusual in an immune competent host.
