The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

Can oral birth control pills permanently affect a womans fertility after stopping it? My wife still hasn't had a normal period months after stopping.

No, not at all: The oral contraceptive pills will not change your fertility as this is an old myth from the days when the higher dose pills were used extensively. Patients who had irregular anovulatory menstrual flows were often placed on the pill to "regulate" their cycles as young women. Then when it was stopped to get pregnant, their periods went back to their previous irregularity and the pill was "blamed". ...Read more

Dr put me on birth control pills to regulate periods. After my periods ends 3 days later I again have bleeding? Is this Normal.? Should I stop pills

No: First check a pregnancy test as this a common cause of bleeding on the pill. Second make an appointment with your physician about the bleeding. You probably just need a different pill or different dose, but I tell my patients to finish out their current pack and transition to the new birth control so they don't end up pregnant. ...Read more

Is it possible to get pregnant the very first cycle after stopping birth control pills? Finished my last pack last period started nov 15th trying 4baby

Pregnancy after bcp: Yes, but the rate of miscarriage is much higher. You should wait until you have one "normal" period (not the one after a pill cycle). Get a basal body thermometer and check your temp starting on day 10 0r 11, and when it rises on about day 13 or 14, you will be ovulating, which is the best time to try for pregnancy. ...Read more

I got my period 1 week early after I stoped taking birth control pills... is it normal?

It can happen: As long as one's new, reliable birth control method is being used properly, one can wait about two cycles to see how the cycles become regular after coming off birth control pills. However, if one failed to properly use a new form of birth control (or is trying for a baby), then one can check a home pregnancy test, if a regular menstrual period doesn't come next month (next cycle). ...Read more

I got what seems to be my period today but I still have two more days on my active birth control pills. Is this normal? I had sex over a month ago without a condom but I was on the pill and I am consistent with taking it.

This: This can occur, and is nothing to worry about. In a situation such as this, continue taking the active pills as normal regardless if your period has started or not. There is a very low chance that the bleeding means you are/were pregnant. If you want to be 100% sure you can always take an early prediction pregnancy test. Continue with your pills as usual. If you continue to have irregular bleeding on your pills, you may need a different hormone formulation; your doctor will be able to evaluate your cycle history and prescribe a pill that will be better for you.
Good luck. ...Read more

Is it normal to not have period on birth control pills 3 months at a time?

Yes; depends upon BC: Some birth control pills are designed so that you only have your menses/period once a quarter or even just once a year. With that said, due to individual response to hormonal differences, it's not uncommon to spot or have irregular menses such that your Family Doc, GYN or Planned Parenthood will need to adjust dosing regimen. Of course, you need to take pills every 24hrs for them to be effective. ...Read more
