Aside from afrin, what are other effective nasal decongestants?

Aside from afrin, what are other effective nasal decongestants?

Nasal decongestants: While nasal decongestant sprays or drops can provide some temporary relief from nasal obstruction, they should not be used for more than three days (check the very small print on the bottle). If used for longer, a "rebound" effect will occur, and nasal congestion becomes worse and more difficult to treat. Additionally, longer use of nasal decongestants can permanently damage the nasal septum. ...Read more

I use afrin (oxymetazoline) regularly. Is it possible to be addicted to afrin (oxymetazoline)?

I use afrin (oxymetazoline) regularly. Is it possible to be addicted to afrin (oxymetazoline)?

Medicine Nose: That's what rhinitis medicamentosa means. Lots of opinions here; I like dr. Klein's the best. This addiction involves 2 problems - tachyphylaxis - the effects of the spray wear off quickly & rebound - when it wears off you are more stuffed then before you started. "cold turkey" works in 3 days. Topical nasal steroids and saline spray make "rehab" a lot easier. Good luck! ...Read more

Had a bad cold and used afrin (oxymetazoline). On 5th day now. Only needed it once today unlike other days. Is it ok to still use tomorrow since I'm needing it less?

No: Stop the afrin immediately or you will develop rebound and rhinitis medicamentosa, a fancy name that will make your nose worse and breathing worse. Otc nasal sprays should only be used for 3 days. The cause of you nasal obstruction is usually a viral infection and saline irrigations are much more physiological and safer. ...Read more

I: I suggest you see an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist. You may be dealing with enlarged turbinates. These are are small rounded bony projections inside the breathing passage on each side of your nose. They can cause significant blockage resulting in symptoms as you described in your post. One side could be larger than the other, further explaining your problem. There are procedures to help reduce the size of the turbinates, and would ultimately solve your breathing problem.
Best of luck. ...Read more

Afrin (oxymetazoline) mix with equal part saline solution. Allows for long term use without overdosing. Healthy? Or cancer causing?

The problem with. .: With long-term use of afrin is the rebound effect in the nasal cavity and a potential for increasing blood pressure. Diluting it with saline is not a good long-term solution. There are some prescription nasal sprays that are safe to use for the long-term treatment of allergies and nonallergic nasal conditions. There is no association with the use of afrin and cancer. ...Read more

Can you take many sprays of afrin (oxymetazoline) in one day without overdosing?
