Is the 3 day (military) diet better than doing the atkins diet for faster results and more weight loss? 14 years old 250 pounds.

Diet and Activity: Key is to burn more calories than you take in. Body likes to use carbohydrates (sugar/pasta/bread/potatoes) Decreasing carbohydrates helpful. Eat more lean protein like chicken, fish, nuts, beans. Avoid saturated fats (animal fats). Need some fat so plant based fats best. Vegs and fruits have fiber which reduces hunger. Lastly need exercise, 30-40 min walking 5x/wk to start. 1500-1800 cal/day ...Read more

50f on weight watchers. 40 mg celexa (citalopram) a day ..Weight loss very slow. Following diet/ exercising. Could it be celexa (citalopram) slowing progress? Different med ?

Not likely: Celexa (citalopram) is not known to slow down weight loss and has anorexia as a side effect. I am taking 20mgs lexapro (escitalopram). Will this make losing weight more difficult and my weight training less effective per workout ?

Carb cravings: Escitalopram (Lexapro) increase available serotonin in the brain - this can cause an increase in both hunger and cravings for carbohydrates. In addition, antidepressant SSRI's like escitalopram can adversely influence lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, leading to weight gain. On the flip side, people who are anxiety and depression eaters may experience decrease appetite on meds, and lose weight. ...Read more

Follow healthy diet (1200 cals), exercise 6 hrs a week (weights and cardio) but struggle 2 lose weight (hormones & insulin fine).Could it be femodene?

Possible, but: It may be that even 1200 calories is too much for you, depending upon your height. The shorter you are, the fewer calories you require. It takes 3500 calories burned off that you don't eat in order to lose one pound. You could also be calculating your calories incorrectly. Check w/a registered dietitian. ...Read more

Im a bit chunky, extreme difficulty w weight loss. Heard of natural supplement Garcinia cambogia, it claims to greatly increase weight loss. Thoughts?

Not impressed: As a doctor who specializes in herbal medicine I'm very open to the use of herbs but am not impressed with Garcinia Cambodia; there have been several research studies on it and most show it is has minimal if any benefits. See https://authoritynutrition.com/garcinia-cambogia-extract/ For other weight loss supplements see http://tinyurl.com/j2kf6m9 Bottom line- no substitute for diet- see comment: ...Read more

Tried and true diet pills for weight loss?

None: There are no totally safe effective diet pills, particularly the otc garbage that's sold in local stores, by your friends, advertised on tv or on the internet. Why look for pills, why not get on a regimen of diet and exercise instead. It actually can work and won't harm you. ...Read more

What is a reasonable amount of weight gain per week after starting resistance/core/weight training program if diet remains same. Losing wt b4 now gain?

Many variables : Not knowing your current weight, dietary macronutrient ratio, caloric intake, genetics or hormone ratios (very important in a 56 year old). It is common for resistance training to halt weight loss and in many cases to increase weight gain given the effects of resistance training on Insulin sensitivity and muscle development. Lost 28lbs on 30 day hCG diet, day 11 in p4. Gained 12lbs w/abd distention (3.5") in last 10 days. Maintaining 1200 cal low carb diet. Causes?

Exercise: The HCG approach to weight loss is not recommended by multiple reputable medical organizations and fda (http://www.Fda.Gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm281333.Htm) clinical trials show no extra weight loss beyond diet alone. It can cause blood clots and serious depression. I recommend stopping hcg. Increasing exercise is a good way to get over a weight loss plateau. ...Read more

24 female 156 pounds 2 days of cardio, 2 days of strength training a week healthy diet- what should be my goal weight and body fat % goals?

Sounds good already: Depending on your build and height, 156 lbs actually is good considering the current obesity in us. So if you are 5ft6 or 6ft7, you are just a few lbs above ideal, but remember that muscle is heavier than fat. Being plump and active is better than nl wt and a couch potato. Body fat 20-30% is good for a female. So, eat well, sleep well, and keep up the good work. Good luck and happy new year. ...Read more

Is consuming 920 calories a day ok? I'm trying to lose weight by exercising & counting calories. I'm 140 lbs, ideal weight is my prebaby weight of 122

Many more ?s: It is possible to eat around 1, 000 cal per day to loose weight. The trick is getting the proper nutrition and vitamins into that constrained calorie count. I would also say that exercise at that calorie level would need to be temporarily halved or stopped, depending on what you are doing and how intense the workout is. A better approach may be a few more calories with moderate exercise. ...Read more

Diabetic after whipples. 250mg metformin 3 times a day. Diabetes under control but losing weight after cutting down on carbs.want weight gain?

It will be difficult: I'm glad that you're able to control your inevitable diabetes after a Whipples with only a low dose of Metformin. Metformin is also one of the best anti-cancer medications there is--so I encourage you to continue to take it. You'll just need to increase your caloric intake--mostly fat and protein. Appetite enhancers include the antihistamine Periactin (cyproheptadine hydrochloride) (best taken at night), and the cannabinols. ...Read more

Weight training (mornings), a negative energy balance (diet), now adding cardio at 65% of my max hr for 45 min (evenings) for a desired body fat of 5% ?

You will...: Burn muscle as well as lose body fat. Personally, not a desirable approach. The elist football players i see at ut have body fat measurements in the 7% range (not linemen, obviously). 5% is somewhat extreme. Also, your cardio at 65% maximal heart rate is too low to improve cardio fitness. Therefore i assume that your sole goal is extreme leanness to the point of......? ...Read more

I'm on levothyroxine 50mcg working out strict eating regime & not losing a lb. Is it safe to take a thyroid supplement weight loss pill?

What pill?: I'm not sure what type of pill you mean- one that claims to stimulate the thyroid? That's ok but you prob. Need more levothyroxine ;/or to add t3 (liothyronine). 50 mcg is a small dose. Your doc probably thinks its enough because your TSH is ok. Check free t3 (liothyronine)- i like my patients to be in upper half of normal range. Are acai berry supplements effective for appetite suppression and weight loss?

Simple answer: NO!: Don't believe all the hype about acai. All the same crazy claims were also made for hoodia, chromium, products claimed to block cortisol and a bunch of other things. If you are trying to lose some weight, keep a diet log, cut way back on potatoes, bread (of all kinds), pasta, cereal, and rice and get more exercise. Then give it some time. Don't waste your $ on these supplements. ...Read more

5'1, 165lbs, goal is 150.I eat 1500cal a day & burn off 350cal, 6 days a wk on treadmill. Will this lead to successful weight loss? Rate of weight loss?

Weight loss: Burning off 350 calories 6 days a week is 2100 calories a week. A pound of fat is 3500 calories. But, the real benefit of aerobic exercise is that you are burning calories at a higher rate for roughly 4-6 hours after stopping exercise. Good luck! ...Read more
