Adult Growth Spurt
What other than a pituitary tumor could cause a noticeable height increase in adults? I noticed a growth spurt around age 38 & then another at 41.
What causes spontaneous growth spurts in adults? Same height for yrs then out of blue had a growth spurt around 38 another @ 41adding inches to height
Endocrine Disorder: Spontaneous growth spurts in adults is abnormal. Normal human growth ceases by the time we reach 18-20 yo, when the growth plate in our long bones close. Growth is hormonally regulated via pituitary-mediated secretion of growth hormone, GH. Excess GH is concerning for an endocrine disorder, such as a pituitary tumor. Please see your doctor for a full evaluation and referral to an Endocrinologist.
What can causes a child age 4 to eat as much as 2 adults daily, with no weight gain or growth? This has been going on for months. We expected a growth spurt. That has not happened. He can get up from a meal where he will eat more than the adults, and say
You: You are correct in thinking about a growth spurt. This is usually why a child will begin to eat much more than usual. A growth spurt may only result in his feet gowing or gaining a few inches in height. Don't expect to see a dramatic change. On the other hand, polyphagia (eating excessive amounts of food) can be an early sign of juvenille diabetes. The best thing to do is have your child evaluated by his pediatrician or primary care provider.
See below: Depends on what you define as a growth spurt. Usually, these may last for a few weeks to months but some people start then just continue to grow until their genetic limit is reached. If the pattern shows something outside the family pattern, get seen by your doc for an evaluation.
Any time: There are really no rules when it comes to teenage growth. That is why some boys end up 6'8" NBA stars and the rest of us don't. Joking aside, boys' height typically slows by age 14-16 and girls' by age 13-15. Some conditions may alter these typical windows, and sometimes kids will surprise everyone with a 19 year old spurt, but the vast majority fit into the norms described.
Varies: Boys normally enter puberty between ages 9-14 as evident by initiation of testicular growth. The actual pubertal growth spurt happens during mid-late puberty in boys. Puberty is complete within 2-4.5 years from the start depending on the boy. The peak growth velocity can be anywhere from 1-3 years after signs of initial testicular enlargement. Statistically, the average age for this is 12-14 yo.See 1 more doctor answer
Growth spurt: Growth spurts begin during childhood and end usually well before age 25. Your pediatrician should have charts of your height and weight growth and it should have been given to you and your parents. If they don't have anything to show you complain to your current doctor. Everyone should have that information available to them from age 1 month to 18.
A growth spurt: Is an increase in the rate of height growth from baseline. Most children from age 5 on will grow between 2-2.5 inches a year, often gaining a little more weight in the winter and height in the summer, but during a growth spurt, this rate increases to 3 or more inches a year. It may be accompanied by an increase in appetite or other signs of puberty with genital hair and breast growth, etc.
