ETD: Eustachian tube dysfunction the natural pressure equalizing tubes in your ear are failing during descent. You can try to pop ears with gum and blowing out. Check with your primary doctor to see if you could be okay taking afrin (oxymetazoline) prior to take off/landing which will help open your nose and also your ear tubes. Also, my patient swear by a product called "earplanes". I can't recommend them though. ...Read more

Needs a recheck: Taking an antibiotic for an ear infection does not protect into the future. If he is symptomatic again, he may have another infection. The only way to know is to have his doctor examine him. In the meantime, use Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen as tolerated for pain. ...Read more

Any hearing loss: The first question i ask a patient with ear ache (otalgia) is if there is any hearing loss associated with pain. If there is no hearing loss and particularly if the pain is in front of the ear, i would be thinking tmd. This could be joint disease, muscle spasm or referred pain to the side of the face (ear) from dental disease as the other reviewer suggested. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my child is 3.8 yrs has adenoids & ear pain. has been advised ear & adenoid surgery. pls suggest medicine?

Talk to his doctor: Frequent ear infections such as more than 6 times/year may be an indication for T &A (tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy), particularly if he has hearing loss due to the frequent ear infection. For each episode of infection, an antibiotics such as Amoxicillin should work, if not, a very high dose Amoxicillin could be tried. At any rate, I think yuou need to discuss this issue with your child's doctor ...Read more

My 3 years child is suffering from ear pain. He is complaining pain in left ear after every 3 to 4 hours. Kindly suggests ear drops?

Look in the ear first: You can buy a cheap otoscope at the pharmacy and looked directly in the ear at the eardrum. For a three-year-old I would wonder first of all do they have an infection. Then I would have a question of a foreign body. So I suggest you don't put anything in his ear until you know what the air looks like. ...Read more

I had grommets inserted when i was 5 three times and now as a adult i get sharp inner ear pain that usually last to a minute. Is this normal?

Not from the tubes: Very unlikely the ear pain you are getting has anything to do with the tubes you had as a child. Most like cause is strain of the tempromandibulr joint(tmj). Try motrin, soft diet for a week and don't chew gum, ice, etc. Try to chew opposite the side that hurts. If this doesn't work, see your physician. ...Read more

Child ear pain?

Child ear pain?

Ear Pain Child: Ear pain is extremely common in childhood and although it is distressing, is usually caused by a minor infection that will resolve on its own. It can be VERY painful, due to pressure inside the ear drum so treating with pain killers like paracetamol +/- ibuprofen is the main treatment. If fevers and pain are ongoing for more than 3 days, then we sometimes advise antibiotics. ...Read more

Child had tonsils and adenoids out and now has horrible ear pain, what to do?

Child had tonsils and adenoids out and now has horrible ear pain, what to do?

Expected after T+A: Your ears often hurt after the tonsils have been removed. Spasm of some of the throat muscles (which head up towards the ears, confusing the patient about where the pain is really coming from). Chewing gum or gummy candies can really help. Motrin is now permitted for most patients after surgery and can help too. It should go away within a week. ...Read more

Child has ear pain that last a few seconds but several times a day ENT says no infection but a hole in ear drum. So what can cause that pain?

Child has ear pain that last a few seconds but several times a day ENT says no infection but a hole in ear drum. So what can cause that pain?

multiple sources: The nerve branch that supplies the ear drum is part if the verve that supplies the jaw joint and teeth. Many times there are crossover messages between these structures where the person senses the issue as the ear but the issuew is somewhere else. It is so common we have a medical code for it for the records. Most of these respond to antiinflamatory medications like ibuprofen. ...Read more

External otitis: Make sure to keep the drops at the proper temperature. Swirl them gently before applying . If the canal is too full of thick debris for the drops to go in, an ear nose and throat doctor (ENT) can suction out the pus and even place a cotton wick into the ear canal. Usually this is not necessary, but can provide relief for severe infections. ...Read more

Please help for ist 4days- ear pain, eardurms(retracted), ear fullness then- tinnitus, ear crackling on swallow, earfullness(sometimes) no hearing loss?

See an ENT doctor: Ear pain and fullness can be due to tmd (temporo-mandibular disorder). Retraction of drum may indicate eustachian tube obstruction, but that requires a specialist's observation. Crackling on swallowing is normal. The presence of normal hearing strongly indicates no pathology in the external or middle ear. ...Read more
