Is day care or family member care more beneficial to the development of a toddler?

Is day care or family member care more beneficial to the development of a toddler?

Personal preference: There really isn't a 'right' answer to this question. I have my personal opinion formed after almost 30 years of caring for kids. In the first 3 years of life, I really think family care is better. Helps baby form bonds and learn trust, decreases exposure to illness. After age 3, I think the social needs of the child are very different and the social needs outweigh any other benefits. ...Read more

STRETCH=MALFUNCTION: Hold your poo long enough and the large intestine balloons. The muscles in the wall stretch thin and become less capable of efficient emptying. This can be reversed if a normal pattern is pushed by scheduled emptying. If not, this leads to a lifetime of chronic bowel malfunction. Intermittent constipation and bowel leakage. Similar things happen with the bladder wall, but are less common. ...Read more

I'm wondering are families typically effective when both parents work & kids grow up in day care?

Not especially: From the phrasing of your question, it sounds to me like you have lots of guilt about working full time. This is very natural. There is no substitute for parents spending time with their children as much as possible. But you also need to do what you can to provide for your family, that is also important! What is the typical day care illness in the first year. My son has been sick since day care 10 mo-18 mo. Typical or poor hygiene?

Fairly typical: Kids in day care can have a new cold every month. Ultimately this is a good thing (so long as they're otherwise healthy) as the broad exposure to different viruses and "germs" helps their immune system to develop as it should - robust and able to handle lots of stuff later on. Kids who are raised in "sterile" surroundings often end up having problems like asthma and lots of allergies. ...Read more
