Are control and power issues typical for alcoholics/adult children of said alcoholics?

The basic issue: Severe anxiety is what drives the alcoholic to drink alcohol (a potent anxiolytic). Sometimes anxiety is expressed as "control issues", and inflexibilty, and an inability to "go with the flow". Anxiety has been shown to run in families. So, the answer is yes. If you live with someone who suffers from alcoholism, get to al-anon, or go to aa meetings that are "open meetings". ...Read more

Can you tell me are adult children of an alcoholic more prone to become alcoholics then the general public?

Can you tell me are adult children of an alcoholic more prone to become alcoholics then the general public?

Yes: And for many reasons. Being raised in an alcoholic household can increase stress and anxiety, and promote use of alcohol as a coping strategy in children as they grow older. In addition, there are genetic influences even if the person is not raised in their home of origin. It does not mean that an adult child of an alcoholic is destined to have alcoholism, but does increase the risks, esp. In men. ...Read more

Can you tell me, are adult children of an alcoholic more prone to become alcoholics then the general public?

Yes: Both because of the potential trauma growing up in an alcoholic household, with all of its stresses and possible abuse/neglect, as well as genetic predisposition. Some physicians strongly caution children of alcoholics to not even begin to drink because of their heightened risks. Even children separated at birth from alcoholic fathers had a fourfold increase in alcoholism later in life. ...Read more

My baby is 3 weeks throwing up every time she eats . Her dad was alcoholic could this be fetal alcohol syndrome I'm concerned ?

Not usually a sign: Fetal alcohol syndrome, FAS, can cause some problems in the head and neck but I am not aware of it causing problems like you describe The baby is likely having normal reflux which is seen in almost all babies. This can be helped with smaller and more frequent feedings. If the baby does not gain weight then your doctor may start a treatment but generally babies outgrow the vomiting/reflux ...Read more

Will my children become alcoholics after watching me abuse alcohol for years?

Will my children become alcoholics after watching me abuse alcohol for years?

Not necessarily: Many studies indicate that there is a genetic component to alcoholism. Being brought up in an alcoholic home can only enhance this risk. Children tend to develop problem solving skills that they have observed in a parent. Taking a drink is not a good example. If you care enough to be concerned, you have already taken a positive step toward sobriety and a better life. ...Read more
