Adrenal Glandular Supplements
Safe, but ineffectiv: If you truly have adrenal insufficiency, dhea alone is not adequate replacement, and you will need additional hormones including glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. "adrenal imbalance", "adrenal fatigue" etc are really pseudo-diseases, not well characterized, and it probably wont hurt to take dhea. ...Read more
A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person's diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while ...Read more
Why supplements?: Your thyroid and adrenals are precisely regulated by the pituitary and other factors. If your thyroid and adrenal are functioning normally, then you don't need supplements, and they will not help you. If your thyroid or adrenals are underactive, then you need to take hormone replacement. Best done by a doctor who knows about this (eg. An endocrinologist). Not someone who sells his own supplement. ...Read more
Neither: Actually, more Prednisone is used than either of the other 2 meds. Cortisone has been the traditionally used med but must be given several times daily. Prednisone and Prednisolone can usually be given once daily. Also, because cortisone causes some salt retention, it is better for those with low blood pressure while the others are better for those with higher blood pressure. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Formal testing: Only by performing formal dynamic adrenal stimulation (so called acth stimulation test) that a full assessment of the adrenal-pituitary axis be assessed and be determined if cortisol (or its equivalent) supplementation is needed. The is no medical literature to date to support the notion that use of adrenal "by product" remedies (available over the counter with no prescription) are helpful. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Not really: The adrenal makes cortisol and adrenaline, both of which are stress hormones. People who are stressed out and having trouble coping are sometimes persuaded that it’s the adrenal’s fault. This is usually not true. Poor adrenal function is determined by an acth (cotrosyn) stim test. See an endocrinologist if you have concerns. You don't need a supplement, just healthy living and stress reduction. ...Read more
Why take adrenal?: Bovine adrenal cortex will contain a mixture of steroids, especially cortisol. This will suppress your natural adrenal output, and can cause diabetes, osteoporosis, central obesity, and on and on. Google "cushing's syndrome" and "side effects of steroids" to get the picture. Why do this? ...Read more
Are the supplements adren-all, reacted multi-min, pregnenalone, phosphatidylserine bad for liver? I got put on these for adrenal stress, have ab pain
There is NO: Such thing as adrenal stress, it's an internet myth. Also, those supplements won't help you in any way. Who knows what's in them or what harm it could do -- but they can't do any good. Since you don't have a disease, why try to treat it with something that can'y help and may harm? ...Read more
May not need it: Adrenal fatigue is often a fake diagnosis. The adrenal makes cortisol and adrenaline, which are stress hormones. People who are stressed out and having trouble coping are sometimes persuaded that it’s the adrenal’s fault. This is usually not true. Poor adrenal function is determined by an acth (cotrosyn) stim test, and not by measuring just one blood or saliva level. See an endocrinologist. ...Read more

I am fatigued often due to stress and a naturopath told me to buy supplements with glandular extracts. Is this legitimate as won't it just be digested?
What extracts?: Yes, glandular extracts will be digested but possibly some might be available to your body. What extracts did this naturopath what you to buy? Without knowing what kind of training this naturopath has had or what kind of evaluation s/he performed, i can't comment on legitimacy. There are naturopathic colleges in canada and the us which provide solid educations, but not all "naturopaths" attend. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Can Rx hormone supplements (e.g. for thyroid, adrenal support) be effective for diagnosed Chronic Fatigue (ME)? Are certain tests required in advance?
Uncertain: There is at this time no convincing data to prove existence of adrenal fatigue (stress-induced adrenal insufficiency too small to measure), & symptoms attributed to it may be due to depression, sleep deprivation, acute stress reaction, hypothyroidism, heart failure, or other. If mood, aerobic exercise can be helpful for brain fog. Best to seek medical opinion, and ask doc before starting exercise. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
