Adrenal Gland Complications With Long Term Prednisone Use
How long dose it take for your adrenal glands to start to work when you have been on prednisone for 9 months and are down to 6mgs now?
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
On prednisone 1yr.Is it normal 2get lightheaded, confused, crave salt,h20 w/slow taper?Sx went away eventually. Was that the adrenal glands "waking up"?
Certainly possible: Hi. I'm glad the symptoms went away. While the pred taper will not make you aldosterone deficient, BP can dip during a pred taper, and that could be aided by salt and water. I'm sorry you've been on pred that long...tough drug in a lot of ways. I hope the condition you're on prednisone for is staying at bay during the taper. Good luck and happy 2015! ...Read more
How does coffee affect the different parts of the adrenal gland in the short term and in the long term?
Highly variable: and depends on dose of caffeine and the individual biology of the person. Caffeine is structurally related to the body's own stimulants that are produced by the adrenal gland - norepinephrine and epinephrine - and may also increase the production of cortisol by the adrenal as well, further potentiating the "flight or fight" response. Short-term more energy, long-term perhaps more fatiguability. ...Read more

Are naturopaths legitimate. One gave me adrenal gland extract to help with fatigue saying the extract will support my glands.Don't you just digest it?
Probably not helpful: True adrenal gland extract would contain some hormones including epinephrine which might escape digestion and increase your heart rate and blood pressure among other things. But most of it would be digested and have no effect. The "extract" they use is from untested, and unregulated sources and is unlikely to contain anything of value, let alone medical value. Save your money. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Many causes: "adrenal problems" is a very broad question. Your adrenal produces hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline. We need these hormones to sustain life; they are increased in response to stress. Adrenal failure can be from autoimmunity; adrenal overactivity from tumors. Alternative practitioners often allege “adrenal fatigue” from chronic stress. See an endocrinologist for adrenal problems. ...Read more
Endocrine gland: The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and their main function is to make hormones. The adrenal glands make hormones in response to stress (cortisol, epinephrine), hormones that affect kidney function and blood pressure (aldosterone), and sex hormones (androgens). These hormones circulate all around the body to affect the target organs and tissues. ...Read more
