Doctor insights on:
My 8.5wk ultrasound found a 6x4.5x 4.2cm ovarian cyst. Please explicitly list safe exercises. Stair walking? Slow elliptical w/ high resistance?
What did your OB doc: Say , your OB doc should have explain that in detail to you already so call him or her today ! so they can instruct you, if you were my pt i would say no exercise other than slow walking and no intercourse until you get a followup us in 2-3 weeks tomake sure the cyst is resolving, if it would rupture hopefully not, you could lose the pregnancy, you will have plenty of time later to exercise. ...Read more
Evaluation first: The elderly are not restricted from exercise. You say that you have kyphosis. Is this due to fractures secondary to osteoporosis? You should see your pcp & be evaluated. A metabolic evaluation & cardiovascular evaluation should be performed. If calcium deficiency is found then take corrective diet changes. If a healthy heart is there, then contact a physical therapist & start an exercise program. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
For 'runners knee' which running shoe would u recommend - Asics Gel Enhance Ultra 3 Running Shoe or Brooks Womens Adrenaline GTS 15 Running Shoe?
Not just Shoes...: Either shoe will do, but shoes are not the end all treatment for runners knee. There are many more things to consider before fixating on the shoe type. More important is whether you had, presently have or are in a preventive mode for the treatment of the problem. I suggest you seek out a sports medicine ortho specialist to do a proper evaluation and subsequent treatment and exercise protocol. ...Read more

Any doctors out there who have tried sleep/activity/etc. Tracking devices and services (e.G., jawbone's up, fitbit, nike+ fuelband)? Thoughts?
I use fitbit: I've been using fitbit daily for over 2 years. During the day it shows my activity patterns, and allows me to use that feedback to modify the behavior. For example if I have not met my step goal by dinner time a postrprandial walk becomes more attractive. At night, the fitbit can provide useful information regarding quality of sleep. The web software allows for tracking of calorie intake andweight. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Great: I recommend the pilate chair to my patients more for when they need additional stretching of tight joints. It works great. I does help with tone as well, but i would recommend an excercise that adds some joint loading to help with muscle development and bone quality (as long as you don't suffer from arthritis). Good luck! ...Read more
My son is 20 with17 degree scoliosis. What mattress would u recommend? Thinking nova 12 inch memory foam on flatbed.
Best quality for $: Forget about his size curve, it does not factor into your choice of bed. You want a bed that is comfortable-usually a relatively firm mattress that is good quality for cost or has a good term warranty & return policy! all mattresses will wear out especially if not rotated regularly and if you are heavy or obese. Our ancestors slept on leaves, branches , grasses & even hides! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Does riding a bus vs. Driving cause more wear-and-tear? What about walking up steps w/ osteoarthritic knees?
Driving/riding bus/: Long question if you do not have any pathology in your lower extremities including knees, than it does not matter whether you drive or ride the bus.Knees can withstand wear and tear of either. If you have osteoarthritis of knees , you should clinb the stairs slowly, take your time one at a time holding on the rail so there is less strain on your knees. ...Read more
Good question!: I have tried to find answers for this, to no avail. Suggestions from our spinal cord injury rehab center include 1. Have a way to call 911 from your bed 2. A companion dog who is trained to drag you to safety until help arrives, 3. Smoke and heat detectors through a home alarm service, who will send emergency personnel if they go off, and 4. A heat-triggered automatic sprinkler system. ...Read more

Is Windsor Pilates along with Shwinn Airdyne Biking daily okay for total knee replacement patients?
IMHO . . .: 1st we need to define static vs dynamic. http://thesportjournal.org/article/do-static-sport-athletes-and-dynamic-sport-athletes-differ-in-their-visual-focused-attention/ lists soccer & volleyball as dynamic w/track & field plus gymnastics as static. I have only read about kitesurfing but it appears rather dynamic to me. Check out http://www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:239141/FULLTEXT01.pdf. ...Read more
