Why do men have ADHD more often than women?

Why do men have ADHD more often than women?

Not known or do they: Women are less likely to externalize with their adhd. So an inattentive adhd female student will be assessed as "withdrawn, " while an equivalent hyperactive male will be noticed. Allowing for the different clinical presentation in women, there is still a male preponderance in adhd. There may be an increased susceptibility in males for adhd, or a decreased susceptibility in females. ...Read more

Do you think ADHD is different in women ? What self-help books/websites would you recommend ? Is it a good idea to work freelance with ADHD ?

Yes : Women rarely have hyperactive symptoms as men do, but frequently they are the inattentive subtype, & are thought of as "ditzes." this is very unfortunate. Sari solden's book "women with attention deficit disorder" is older but is still quite the best on this topic. I suggest you read it for more information. ...Read more

Re-starting Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine): Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) dosing goes more by clinical response than by weight. If you've done well on a certain dose in the past, restarting that dose would be reasonable and then possibly increase as doctor recommended. A treatment plan should also include behavioral strategies and possible school accommodations to help you focus. I hope this helps. All the best. ...Read more

The opposite: First of all you should never take any medication that is not prescribed for you. Ironically, stimulants such as Ritalin (methylphenidate) slow down thought process and hyperactivity in people with adhd whereas it will likely increase thought process leading to poor focus and judgement and possibly hyperactivity in any one else. ...Read more

Bipolar disorder: Is characterized by manic episodes. While there are several symptoms that characterize manic episode, decreased need for sleep and increased activities are the most common. I'm a 29y/o woman diagnosis with ADHD and anxiety. I was prescribed 10mg of fluoxetine, 25mg of hydroxyzine and 0.2mg of clonidine at bedtime. Is that safe?

I'm a 29y/o woman diagnosis with ADHD and anxiety. I was prescribed 10mg of fluoxetine, 25mg of hydroxyzine and 0.2mg of clonidine at bedtime. Is that safe?

Probably safe.: The doses you have listed (10 mg of prozac, 25 mg of vistaril, (hydroxyzine) and 0.2 mg of clonidine) seem reasonable to me, especially if there was at least a few days between starting each (so that the cause of any adverse effects might be more easily known). Taking Adderall (as indicated) with these has some risks of adverse interactions, thus close monitoring for potential adverse effects is indicated. ...Read more
