Thyroid tests: your tests are results of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyrogolbulin. If you are hypo (low) thyroid with these positive tests, a DX of Hashi is high. If you are euthyroid (normal tsh, normal T4) it suggests DX of autoimmune thyroid disease. Please be sure you follow up with your endocrinologist. Good luck. ...Read more

Multinodular goiter: Multi nodular goiter (mng) is likely what you are describing. This condition often times does not cause thyroid hormone problems but if it does, then the term functional or toxic mng is applied. In either scenario, the options including just monitoring nodular size by us versus thyroid removal, either surgically or via radioactive iodine. Seldom that use of thyroid hormone therapy will be helpful. ...Read more

I was wondering is a nodule the same thing as a goiter?

Yes & no: Hi. Goiter refers to abnormal size/shape of thyroid. Goiters can be diffuse or nodular or both. If you have a nodule (aka nodular goiter) and you're NOT hyperthyroid, it could be a cancer, and needs an evaluation for that (fine needle aspiration biopsy). Most nodules are benign when you look at all nodules, but you can't assume benignity. It must be evaluated. Good luck! ...Read more

How long do thyroid goiters and nodules take to develop?

Goiter: Thyroid nodules and goiters are slow growing and take years to grow. However, there could be a more rapid increase in size due to tumors, inflammation, pregnancy, bleeding within the nodules, or thyrotoxicosis (hyper functioning gland). For this reason, once diagnosed, most physicians recommend thyroid nodules/goiters be monitored with annual examination and thyroid ultrasound. ...Read more

Dear sirs!i have had a goiter for years and now since last year one complex nodule been growing 2 cm. Biopsy not suff. Cells may 2012 -new biopsy?

Repeat: If the nodule grew 2cm since your last ultrasound, then i would surgically remove that part if your thyroid. If, however, your thyroid nodule grew and is now 1 cm in size, then i would repeat the biopsy one more time. If this is still insufficient, then i would proceed to surgery. ...Read more

I have multiple nodules like around 20 and a large goiter in my thyroid. Last biopsy was three years ago. Unable to get follow up due to no insurace?

I have multiple nodules like around 20 and a large goiter in my thyroid. Last biopsy was three years ago. Unable to get follow up due to no insurace?

Follow up when u can: I assume the biopsy 3 years ago was benign (negative)? The risk of thyroid cancer is low, with each nodule having an apprx. 5% chance of cancer. Odds are good that u are dealing with a benign process but u should followup as soon as you can get insurance to have this re-evaluated. Look around to see what's available to u. There are clinics that give deep discount for self-pay or free at med school. ...Read more

How long do goiters take to grow and nodules?

A long time: Can be a long time assymptomatic sped up by iodinated contrast dye, for example. A non-toxic multinodular goiter can grow over decades at a rate of 0-20% a year.Taking idodine by mouth in supplements or drugs or havng a heart cath can lead to toxic multinodular goiter. Most thyroid nodules with cancer are "cold nodules" that do not light up as producing thryoid hormone by radioactive iodine scan. ...Read more

Size matters: If the size of your thyroid is causing you symptoms of compression (pressure, pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing), then i would recommend that you have your thyroid removed. If any nodule is > 1cm then it should be biopsied. Otherwise, just observe with yearly or every other year ultrasound. ...Read more
