Mother, 85, diagnosed with malignant pleural effusion adenocarcinoma; life expectancy?

Mother, 85, diagnosed with malignant pleural effusion adenocarcinoma; life expectancy?

Varies: I am sorry to hear about your mother's illness. There is no easy answer on this--i have seen spans of weeks to years. A lot has to do with her pre-illness condition, amount of weight loss, symptoms, time in the hospital. I try in my own practice to emphasize "quality of life" as more important than "quantity of life." i have seen people do better than expected; maintain realistic hope. ...Read more

My mum 67 was diagnosed with metastatic caecal adenocarcinoma, aggressive, stage 4. She started folfox. Can it be cured? Life expectancy?

My mum 67 was diagnosed with metastatic caecal adenocarcinoma, aggressive, stage 4. She started folfox. Can it be cured? Life expectancy?

Serious diagnosis: Stage 4 colon cancer has a very poor prognosis. No one can give you a life expectancy that is exact. It depends upon her response to the treatment. Some people respond very well. Of all people that have this diagnosis only about 8% of them are still alive at 5 years. But still she could be one of that 8%. I hope she responds well to the treatments. ...Read more

Dad n law diagnosed Adenocarcinoma stage IIA. Had surgery 2 remove lobe & removed 1 infect. lympnode & infect. pluris. What's General life expectancy?

Lung CA: I'm sorry to hear your family is going through this difficult time. It sounds like he has lung CA with metastasis. Has he started Chemo or radiation. This may help keep him comfortable and/or prevent further metastasis. You need to discuss his prognosis with his HEM/ONC. Either way he should get his affairs in order. Prepare for the worst & hope for the best. That time clock is out of our hands ...Read more

My mum 67 was diagnosed with metastatic caecal adenocarcinoma, aggressive stage 4 cancer. She's on folfox. Life expectancy??

Varies from months/y: The overall survival of stage 4 colon cancer varies from 1 to 3 years. Most patients have at least 2 years if their tumor responds to chemo. If you tumors regresses after chemo, it may even be surgically removable in which case long term survival(even a cure) can be possible. Ask more questions to your treating oncologist. ...Read more

What is life expectancy of 49 yr old male with stage IV adenocarcinoma of lung? Receive chemo/avastin radiation last CT showed significant progression

Hard to say: Predicting how long someone will live with stage IV lung cancer is always difficult. You said that your disease had progressed. I assume that is on a pet/ct scan. It would depend on how much it's progressed. Unfortunately it may be as little as 8 mos. Or less. It depends on any underlying conditions conditions such as copd. I would strongly advise you to discuss this with your oncologist. ...Read more

My father in law is refusing any kind of treatment for his stage 3a adenocarcinoma . he continues to smoke. what is his life expectancy if he continue?

My father in law is refusing any kind of treatment for his stage 3a adenocarcinoma . he continues to smoke. what is his life expectancy if he continue?

Much shorter: but his chances for survival with this cancer, particularly with refusing any treatment, is already low. Hard to say that it will be much lower with continued smoking. While I would not stop efforts to convince him that he is better off without it, he may feel that there is little chance of survival anyway, and that he may as well smoke. However, new therapies CAN prolong life significantly. ...Read more

My husband is diagnosed with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the right lung with alk & egfr mutations; stage 3b what is the prognosis and life?

Fair: It is extremely unusual to have both mutations. They are mutually exclusive. Patients that do carry one of these mutations are eligible for various medications that target these mutations. Crizonitib for alk and tarceva (erlotinib) for egfr and new agent recently to the market. These new finding have improved the prognosis. Other factors do enter in. Age, ps, smoking history if any, wt. Loss, etc. ...Read more

Potentially serious: Signet ring adenocarcinoma can occur in the stomach, intestine, or in other organs. The stage of cancer is most important in terms of prognosis, and how serious a cancer is.
