Can ritalin or Adderall help with chronic pain? I've had chronic pain for over 5 years, lately, probably the past 2 years, i've noticed that i've been extremely fatigued during the day, i fall asleep at work, and my memory is completely shot. I haven't i
This : This is a complex issue. Central nervous system stimulants (CNS) such as Ritalin (methylphenidate) (methyphenidate) and Adderall (dextroamphetamine with amphetamine) are not considered pain medications. However, many medications in the United States are prescribed as "off label" which means they are used for a purpose other than that which the fda approved it for. Depression often goes hand in hand with chronic, severe pain. A drug like Ritalin (methylphenidate) can be used in treatment refractory depression. When depression improves, there is often an improvement in pain level as well. Dextroamphetamines may be added with narcotic pain relievers to reduce the side effect of drowsiness and it is reported that adding a Dextroamphetamine to a narcotic may lead to more potent pain relief. I am not aware of CNS stimulants being treated as solo medications for pain. It should be noted, that medications that fall into these class can be addictive. Thus, the decision to add a CNS stimulant to your treatment plan should be made with an experienced physician. ...Read moreSee 21 more doctor answers

Does Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) help with fatigue caused from percocet withdraws?
Do you recommend Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) for fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue? My fatigue is way worse to deal with then pain.
Check thyroid: I see many patients with fibromyalgia with fatigue that is due, at least in part, to low thyroid. If you do start thyroid treatment, start at a very low dose and work up slowly because I have seen that many patients with fibromyalgia are very sensitive. Thus they may have symptoms with what appears to be mild hypothyroidism and sensitive to treatment if started too fast. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Not good 4 your hear: This combination isn't good for your heart. Depending on how much & how long you have been mixing these drugs, you could be developing "contraction band cardiomyopathy", a form of heart failure (heart isn't beating efficiently). I would suggest you see your doctor / cardiologist as soon as you can make an appointment. If you pass out / faint, get to an ER / hospital. Use HealthTap Prime otherwise. ...Read more

Coming off Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) abuse- self medicated fatigue problem. Would something like provigil be a bad idea?
Probably: But another solution would be to talk with your psychiatrist about switching to a slow-release, once-daily stimulant like vyvanse, Adderall xr, concerta, Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) xr, or their generic equivalents. Taking one a day, you would then be able to lower the dose with time. Provigil will likely offer you no benefit and may worsen the effects of stopping adderall. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
