Progeria (Definition)

A rare hereditary condition affecting the blood vessels, skin and musculoskeletal system that creates the impression of accelerated aging. Some aging processes are truly accelerated such as atherosclerosis of the coronary and carotid arteries, resulting early death. Most of the other illnesses of aging such as cancer, cataracts, and dementia do not occur but deposition of a substance associated with aging, liposuction, in vital organs leads to impairment of the liver, heart, adrenal glands, brain and skeletal system. Another protein, progeria, leads to defective DNA expression and repair. This protein also enhances the development of atherosclerosis. Children with progeria have brittle bones, pathological fractures, feeding problems, dental abnormalities, hearing loss, growth failure, ...Read more

What disease is the opposite of progeria?

None yet: There are at least three people who showed slower aging than normal. One, Brooke, was evaluated and her DNA examined. The genes responsible for Progeria were unaffected in her and the cause of her poor growth was never found, Another, now over 40 years old and depicted here, is physically like a ten year old but has no language and so far has had no etiology found for his growth ...Read more

Could you give me some information on the disease progeria?

Progeria: Progeria is a self limited process with most recorded cases appearing as new mutations in families that have other normal children. There are rare sibships reported indicating an autosomal recessive form exists. Most don't survive their teens. The oldest on record died at 27. Death is often due to advanced heart disease. ...Read more

Where can I find a doctor who is knowledgeable on the diseases progeria or pica?

FINDING TOP PLAYERS : I would enter the problem and search with a second word such as: expert, article, book, specialist, best doctor and treatment.

You should see someone or more than one to choose from. You can call them and ask if they know anyone c;lose to you--typically mention the closest city.

Other smart physicians may have another approach, and I do not criticize them. ...Read more

How can progeria cause heart disease?

Unknown...: Children with progeria are genetically predisposed to premature, progressive heart disease. Death occurs almost exclusively due to widespread heart disease. As with any person suffering from heart disease, the common events for progeria children are strokes, high blood pressure, angina, enlarged heart, and heart failure, all conditions associated with aging. ...Read more

What is the genetic disorder progeria caused by? Is it a simple recessive trait?

Two likely forms: Progeria syndrome is considered a sporadic (new mutation) phenomenon that has few prenatal indicators. At an average birth wt of 6lb (2.7kg), the relatively small size during gestation is not specific to this disorder. There are rare instances of siblings to normal parents, showing that an autosomal recessive form exists. Most begin to show signs by 6-18mo. ...Read more

Could a cure for progeria syndrome lead to the "fountain of youth"?

Who knows???: First we need to understand the cure or Rx for progeria, then it can be tested to see if it has broader application.
