No intrinsic factor: B12 in the diet usually binds to intrinsic factor in the stomach and then gets absorbed by the small bowel. In pernicious anemia, there is low or no intrinsic factor being made by the stomach cells. Depends: If your doctor did a sickledex that was positive, this might not distinguish between sickle trait and sickle cell disease. The next test is a hemoglobin electrophoresis. If this shows mainly HGB a with HGB s, this is sickle trait. If both a and s but more s, this is sickle/beta+ thalassemia. If only s, sickle cell disease or sickle/beta 0thalassemia. Not unusual: You father is being treated with Prednisone which will raise blood sugar levels. That will resolve usually as the dose is tapered. Meds will control this issue if needed. ...Read more
