Acupuncturists: I don't know the exact number of acupuncturists who are nationally certified -- but you can find out through the national certification commission for acupuncture and oriental medicine [http://www.Nccaom.Org/] which certifies them. Currently, 43 states plus the district of columbia require nccaom exams or certification as a prerequisite to state licensure. ...Read more

Not all conditions: Some acupuncturists are western trained physicians, some are doctors of traditional chinese medicine, some do not have medical degrees. Some acupuncturists can diagnose a wide breath of conditions. Many however provide traditional medicine diagnoses which is much different from western approaches to medicine. Yes - it works: Many (but not all) of the mechanisms of acupuncture are understood now. I have had people see me to disprove that aupuncture works- and they were quite suprised that it worked very well. It has been tested against sham needle insertions to see if it was psychological - the sham insertions were not effective but the acupuncture point insertions were. ...Read more

Not all: Acupuncturists can be md's, do's or doctors of chinese medicine. There are many people who use acupucture traditionally. They are not physicians but are trained in acupuncture & treat their extended families within their homes. In china, peasants were trained in acupuncture & were calld "barefoot warriors". A lot of health care in china is by acupuncturists who don't have formal med training. ...Read more

I know those needles acupuncturists use are super thin, but still, how much do you feel it when they put it in?

Often don't feel: Yes, the needles are uber thin. My patients usually don't feel the needle insertions. Using the "push finger" technique can prevent feeling the insertion. There are a few master point locations that can be uncomfortable but there are usually alternate sites that can be needled. ...Read more

Mixed feeling: Naturopaths mostly survive by debunking conventional doctors and make money selling unregulated and untested potions of dubious merit. Save your money. Acupuncture has some merit and there are clinical trials documenting the value in certain conditions. ...Read more
