Can acupuncture treat sports injuries?

Can acupuncture treat sports injuries?

On top of that, check with your physician if there are any contraindications. Many professional athletes swear by accupunture and other modalities traditional physicians do not regularly embrace. ...Read more

Acupuncture (Definition)

Acupuncture is a treatment based on Chinese medicine -- a system of healing that dates back thousands of years. At the core of Chinese medicine is the notion that a type of life force, or energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee") flows through energy pathways (meridians) in the body. Each meridian corresponds to one organ, or group of organs, that governs particular bodily functions. Achieving the proper flow of qi is thought to create health and wellness. Qi maintains the dynamic balance of yin and yang, which are complementary opposites. According to Chinese medicine, everything in nature has both yin and yang. An imbalance of qi (too much, too little, or blocked flow) causes disease. To restore balance to the qi, an acupuncturist inserts needles at points along the meridians. 16 year old golfer with sports injury in his back in May 2016, re-injured July 2016 playing squash, 2 MRI's done. What might cause ongoing pain......?

Is there instability?: One consideration is to do flexing and extending xrays. If there is motion that would explain the persistent pain. The MRI can show a stress fracture but sometimes it is hard to tell due to motion artifact. Given the lack of agreement I would bite the bullet and get a SPECT bone scan. If negative then push forward with core strengthening with a physiatrist and physical therapist. If it is a stress fracture and it is not healing you could consider a bone stimulator as an off label treatment. I published one case where this was done successfully in a 17 year old elite gymnast. ...Read more
