Medical opinions: nootropics, tcm, &chiropractors a safe alternative to psych meds for ptsd & mood disorders and pain medicines for chronic pain?

Really complicated: So many therapeutic approaches are in your question, it's impossible to answer. Even the "nootropic" part is extremely complicated. These can be food substances like phenethylamine and l-theanine (found in chocolate and green tea) or many other things. Different ones have different characteristics, safety, & effectiveness. An integrative physician could help guide you. www.holisticboard.org. ...Read more

Acupuncture (Definition)

Acupuncture is a treatment based on Chinese medicine -- a system of healing that dates back thousands of years. At the core of Chinese medicine is the notion that a type of life force, or energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee") flows through energy pathways (meridians) in the body. Each meridian corresponds to one organ, or group of organs, that governs particular bodily functions. Achieving the proper flow of qi is thought to create health and wellness. Qi maintains the dynamic balance of yin and yang, which are complementary opposites. According to Chinese medicine, everything in nature has both yin and yang. An imbalance of qi (too much, too little, or blocked flow) causes disease. To restore balance to the qi, an acupuncturist inserts needles at points along the meridians. These acupuncture points are places where the energy pathway is close to the ...Read more

Are there any studies re efficacy of Accupuncture for chronic osteo arthritic pain? A local acupuncturist graduated from Shandong medical university

Are there any studies re efficacy of Accupuncture for chronic osteo arthritic pain?

A local acupuncturist graduated from Shandong medical university

Acupuncture 4 joints: Lots of studies. Acupuncture relieves pain. We would consider it more for acute pain relief. For chronic pain there is one theoretical negative: if you relieve pain some feel it may allow the arthritis to progrss faster without the pain signal to limit activity. You wouldn't want to cut the nerves to a joint and allow someone to abuse it. No problem with using it for hip bursitis or some headaches ...Read more

Would acupuncture help lessen my fibromyalgia symptoms?

Would acupuncture help lessen my fibromyalgia symptoms?

Acupuncture appears to modestly reduce many types of chronic pain, so it's not surprising that many people with fibromyalgia are interested in trying it: While the studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture for fibromyalgia symptoms are somewhat mixed, most suggest that it may have a beneficial role. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles to various depths into strategic points on your body. They are usually left in place for 20 to 30 minutes and sometimes are further stimulated by the addition of heat or electricity. When performed by a trained practitioner, acupuncture has few risks. Fibromyalgia can be difficult to treat, and a combination of treatments may be necessary to control your symptoms. If you're having trouble finding relief for your fibromyalgia pain, it may be worth trying acupuncture. But if your symptoms don't begin to improve within a few weeks, acupuncture may not be the right treatment for you. ...Read more
