Is actos (pioglitazone) still ok to take?

Benefit vs risk..: Like any other medicine in use, consider benefit vs risk--same as driving a car (getting to places faster with risk of accident/breakdown etc.). Currently the biggest concern for people is the risk of bladder cancer on long-term use (40% increase/yr: from 7/10000 to 10/10000 cases). The percentage is big, but absolute is still small. Primary dr. Has stop diabetes meds as humline, acto's, metformin I had reaction to them, said just do diet & exercise but sugar is 180 advice please.

What's A1c?: Hi. If you're A1c is in the 6's on just diet and exercise, then as long as it stays there, you're probably OK; but it almost never does. The meds you list are NOT the only options for type 2! There are many other drug options. What med is better for you actos (pioglitazone) or glyburide I am a 65 year old man whom have been taken glyburide and now my dr want's me to take actos (pioglitazone) I have notice that actos (pioglitazone) have been haveing a lot of lawsuirs

There: There are pros and cons to all meds. Glyburide is a frequent cause of low blood sugar, sometimes life threatening. It tends to cause weight gain also. As a diabetes specialist, I never prescribe glyburide. Actos (pioglitazone) has many benefits despite the lawsuits. Metformin is often stopped when people can still stay on it. The slow release form of metformin is better tolerated from a diarrhea/stomach standpoint. Metformin is very cheap or even free in some areas of the country. There are newer excellent agents that do not cause low sugar and some can be helpful for weight loss. Insulin is sometimes the best approach and if used right, safer than glyburide.

Does actos (pioglitazone) increase depression or react with antidepressants?

Diabetes not actos (pioglitazone): There is a connection btn diabetes and depression and anxiety. If blood sugars fall too low or even drop quickly despite being still high, there is an adrenaline reaction that feels like anxiety. Also, low blood sugars deprive the brain of needed glucose which can cause fatigue and poor concentration-depression like symptoms. Actos (pioglitazone) can cause low blood sugars if not monitored correctly. ...Read more
