Can anyone tell me what the drug actos (pioglitazone) does?

Lowering blood sugar: This med helps to lower blood sugar by improving the cell ability to respond to Insulin as well as reducing sugar-producing ability of the liver. Why is actos (pioglitazone) still prescribed given that lawyers have sued? Should I talk to my doc about it?

Discuss with your MD: Yes, you should discuss every medication with your doctor. I would ignore those ridiculous class action lawsuit commercials you see on tv. It's just greedy lawyers (sorry a lot are in tx). Every medication has side effects. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Aspirin have many side effects, some serious, for example. If a medication is truly too dangerous to outweigh the benefits, it will be removed by the fda. ...Read more

I take 30 mg of actos (pioglitazone) for type 2 diabetes daily. It has been linked to increased risk of bladder cancer in person taking actos (pioglitazone). Is actors safe?

See answer: There has been a slight excess of bladder cancers detected in patients who have taken Actos (pioglitazone) compared to others who do not. This appears to be time and dose dependent. Is actos (pioglitazone) still ok to take?

Benefit vs risk..: Like any other medicine in use, consider benefit vs risk--same as driving a car (getting to places faster with risk of accident/breakdown etc.). Currently the biggest concern for people is the risk of bladder cancer on long-term use (40% increase/yr: from 7/10000 to 10/10000 cases). The percentage is big, but absolute is still small.
