Acl Reconstruction (Definition)

Because an acl (anterior cruciate ligament) cannot heal itself on its own, an acl is "reconstructed" by placing a graft tendon substitute (from your own or donor cadaver tendon) placed into tunnels made in the original acl position, and fixed in place with screws, buttons, or other fixation device. The body then replaces the cells and structure of the graft over 6-8 months, ...Read more

Recovery time from ACL revision surgery on knee?

8-9 months: An acl revision is seldom as simple as a first time acl reconstruction, so rehab would often be a bit more guarded. However, given good graft fixation, and a well-performed procedure, the expected recovery should be the same. Expect 6-12 weeks for return to daily activities and 8-9 months ideally before return to cutting sports. ...Read more

Microfracture and ACL surgery?

Microfracture and ACL surgery?

Good options: Acl reconstruction at your age is a good option if you have knee instability. Only a small percentage of patients (copers) do well without surgery. Micro fracture at the same setting to address small cartilage defects is fine, but an oats procedure maybe better, where. Cartilage plugs are harvested from another area of the knee and implanted to the affected area. Check with your surgeon about it. ...Read more

Whats recovery time for knee arthroscopic surgery ?

Whats recovery time for knee arthroscopic surgery ?

4-8 weeks: For straightforward partial menisectomy (removing part of meniscus) it is typically a quick recovery. Generally crutches are given for comfort but you can be weightbearing as tolerated. Once swelling and pain are reduced and you achieve full range of motion (2-4 weeks, generally) you can begin resuming activities. But you should speak to your orthopedist to get realistic expectations. ...Read more

How successful is ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery?

How successful is ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery?

Very successful: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery has undergone considerable changes over the past decade. Intensive research into the biomechanics of the injured and the operated knee have led to a movement away from the techniques of the early 1980's characterized by post operative casting and delayed rehabilitation, to the current early rehabilitation program which in made the result better. ...Read more

What's PCL reconstruction surgery?

Restoring stability: There are many different methods for PCL reconstructions, depending on the surgeon you go to. There are single versus double bundle, bone block versus soft tissue, and various numbers are sizes of incisions. I tend to perform an all-inside minimally invasive PCL reconstruction using a double bundle configuration. Most of my patients have minimal pain after surgery, however, there rehab is the same. ...Read more

Acl and meniscus reconstruction surgery done. What is the rehabilitation period for recovery?

6-12 mos: Acl: generally speaking. 12 wks for straight line jogging, 6 mos for pivoting activity. 12 mos for full recovery. Maybe a bit longer if allograft used. Meniscus: most meniscal surgeries are a meniscectomy rather than a repair. Meniscectomy recovery is about 1-2 months depending upon other factors. Meniscal healing after a repair is not a guarantee. It takes 6-12 months for full healing. ...Read more

6-9 months: There are 2 considerations for recovery after acl reconstruction. First is the immediate surgery recovery, which can vary depending on surgeon and whether your own tendon is used. Generally you can be walking normally somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. More importantly, the graft does not reincorporate until 6-8 months for your own and 8-9 months for donor graft. How long does it take to recover from an ACL surgery? I just had an ACL surgery 7 weeks ago, going through pt right now. How much longer do I need to be in pt and how long would the entire recovery process be?

AT : At 6-8 weeks you shoul be ambulating, (on my protocol), with a brace fully opened if your notion is good, otherwise locked at around your motion limits, when up and about. 8-10 wean from brace bike and walk or slow jog on even ground 12-16 progress to gentle cutting. All this time you should be on an aggressive closed chain pre for hams and quads..Gradually increase as you knee lets you, listen to it, it will let you know if you are progressing too fast. Full activity goal for my patients is 10-12 months. ...Read more

My daughter is having MCL surgery.. I cannot find much about it or the recovery online. Is recovery similar to an ACL reconstruction?

My daughter is having MCL surgery.. I cannot find much about it or the recovery online. Is recovery similar to an ACL reconstruction?

MCL repairs R not-: -common these days. If a bone fragment came off with the ligament, it's a faster recovery as it is fixed solidly by wires or screws. If this a reconstruction, about the same as an ACL as far as recovery, which again depends on what is used as the graft. Expect a brace with limited motion, especially in extension. In extension the MCL is very tight so usually it's @ about -30 of extension.&rehab. ...Read more

What is the recovery time for an ACL surgery and when can I start to play football again?

8-9 months: Although the time before your surgeon let's you return to sports varies, any pivoting sports place great forces through the reconstruction. An autograft acl (your own tendon) typically takes 6-7 months to mature while an allograft acl (donor tendon) typically takes 8-9 months to mature. The higher your performance level, the more important it is to wait for the acl to heal and mature. 8-9 months! ...Read more

What can I expect post ACL surgery?

Stable knee: An acl reconstruction that heals well should provide you with a stable knee. Other variables such as the status of your knee joint cartilage and especially the status of your medial and lateral menisci also weigh heavily in determining your final degree of functional painfree recovery. Immediately postoperatively, you will have mild to moderate pain and swelling relieved by oral pain meds. ...Read more

What kinds of ACL surgery are there?

What kinds of ACL surgery are there?

Different graft type: The ACL is typically reconstructed (replaced) rather than repaired. We typically reconstruct the ligament with a graft. The graft choice is often individualized to the patient. The three most common graft choices are a portion of the patellar tendon (bone patellar tendon bone), a piece of the hamstring tendon, or a graft from a cadaver (allograft). They all work well in the appropriate patient ...Read more

Rehab & bracing: Not all ACL injuries require surgical intervention, but most do. Most activities of daily living can be performed without a functioning acl. Cutting, pivoting and changing direction are difficult or outright impossible for most patients without an acl.
