What is the exact mechanism behind carpopedal spasm in latent hypocalcemia after tying BP cuff.? Does local acidosis cause fall in calcium or what els

What is the exact mechanism behind carpopedal spasm in latent hypocalcemia after tying BP cuff.? Does local acidosis cause fall in calcium or what els

Muscle irritability: I believe the pathophysiology behind carpopedal spasm induced by trousseau sign is that the ischemia produced by cutting off blood flow (for 3 min) to the arm brings out the irritability of the nerves in the arm due to hypocalcemia, thereby causing muscle contractions that result in carpopedal spasm. I do not believe that localized acidosis or a further fall in calcium levels plays a role. ...Read more

In acute (sudden) kidney failure from uric acid stones, low calcium can happen, but this would be an uncommon situation. A rare condition called tumor lysis syndrome can also show low calcium and high uric acid levels. ...Read more
