Hi I have acid reflux, gastritis, strawlike hair which is thinning, acne, missed period, dry skin, irregular bowel movements. What could this be?

Go see ur family doc: While we usually try to narrow things down to one diagnosis to explain all symptoms, you might have two or more going on, which is why it's important to tell your family doc what's going on & get complete evaluation. Your acid reflux & gastritis are variations on a theme. However, strawlike thinning hair, missed period, dry skin & irregular bowel mvmts might be thyroid disease eg hypothyroidism. ...Read more

Acid Reflux (Definition)

Technically called GERD, acid reflux is the presence of acidic stomach contents in the esophagus. The acid irritates the esophagus causing heartburn symptoms. The regurgitation or reflux can vary greatly as can the symptoms. Blocking stomach acid with medications can alleviate the burning but medication cannot stop the reflux. Complicated GERD requires surgical treatment ...Read more

Can fibers like psyllium be helpful in addrsing slow bowel movement problem where food stays in stomach for long time resulting in acid reflux symptms?

Can fibers like psyllium be helpful in addrsing slow bowel movement problem where food stays in stomach for long time resulting in acid reflux symptms?

Fiber: Fiber products like psyllium provide bulk for good bowel movements but, in my opinion, do not promote better gastric emptying in those patients who have gastroparesis or very slow emptying of stomach contents. There are other medications that do such as reglan or erythromycin. A gastroenterologist is best qualified to advise and treat you. ...Read more

Besides acid reflux, are there side effects of stopping prilosec? Specifically related to bowel changes?

Definitely: Will cause increase in acid production. So will get more reflux symptoms than you used to have. This is called a rebound effect after stopping the med. I would titrate it down slowly. To avoid too much of an issue. It will regulate over time. May cause some GI upset mild loose stools but no long term effects ...Read more

Could acid reflux be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome?

Could acid reflux be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome?

Anything can be: Misdiagnosed. Acid reflux is easy to confirm with a barium swallow/upper GI xray. Irritable bowel should be a diagnosis of exclusion, that is all other causes of your symptoms need to be ruled out by proper diagnostic testing. ...Read more

Is there any relation betn constipation/partial bowel obstruction and acid reflux? Wht relieves constipation? Tried fiber, plenty of water w/o much help.

Constipation: Constipation can cause partial obstruction. The partial obstruction could lead to easy fullness and worsen reflux. Increased activity, fluids, fiber, stool softners and laxatives are main treatment. Evaluation to rule out mechanical obstruction including colonoscopy may be indicated in some cases. ...Read more

Acid reflux sufferer for over 10 years, I use fantodine. Two weeks ago I have issues swallowing, infrequent bowel movements and pain in both armpits?

Maybe not related...: "Transfer dysphagia" is a problem moving the food bolus from your mouth to the top of the esophagus; "transit dysphagia" is a problem transiting the food down the esophagus. Motility studies (modified barium swallow; esophageal manometry) may be helpful in identifying pathology or spasm. GERD of 10 years duration is however a long time--call your GI doctor for checkup & maybe new acid blockers. ...Read more

Why do I have extreme fatigue after some bowel movements & usually after eating? *I was told I have Acid Reflux and just started Nexium (esomeprazole) in AM b4 food.

Fatigue: There is a very long list of conditions and situations that lead to fatigue, so many other factors must be considered. A full evaluation includes analysis of daily habits and lifestyle (are you getting enough sleep?) plus a full medical history and exam to look for systemic causes. It's unlikely but not impossible that the Nexium (esomeprazole) is contributing, if the fatigue started after beginning that med. ...Read more

Stool test detected d.fragilis but doctor ignored it. Hyperactive bowel sounds are scaring me and I have acid reflux and nausea, no vomiting or diarea?

Right choice: You need to get a relationship with a physician who takes time to explain and who you trust. Managing reflux is tricky. Finding a cause for nausea may be a challenge. Gluten enteropathy, Whipple's, and Crohn's are concerns but I'd ignore "pop" claims about that amoeba. ...Read more

I keep feeling nauseated and I also have pain in my right abdomen. The doctor thought it was acid reflux and gave me some medication but I will still?

You are a bit young: For gallbladder disease, but that is one possible explanation if your nausea is especially bad after eating meals that are high in fat. Are there any other medical conditions like diabetes? Have you made certain you aren't pregnant? Do you happen to drink alcohol and sometimes binge? Is there a family history of pancreatitis or even Crohn's disease? Have you been tested for sprue or Helicobacter? ...Read more

Abdominal discomfort: If the discomfort was Sharp and fleeting, it could have been trapped intestinal gas which eventually broke down or was passed. Gall bladder disorders can also be a cause of right upper abdominal discomfort and would be strongly considered if symptoms recur especially after eating fried or greasy foods. Ok what's wrong? I have acid reflux gastirtius and it all so feels like inside my abdomen things are moving some times it feels like something rolls up in my ribs I've had two c sections I have ahuge pouch and it feeks like my abdomanal wall is not wor

It: It sounds like you need to seek a second opinion from a gastroenterologist. There are many tests that can be done to figure out what is causing you so much discomfort. They work up will likely include blood tests and imaging studies (i.e. Ultrasound).
Eventually you will probably have a procedure done called an endoscopy. A camera is used to view your upper GI tract, including your stomach. Don't worry, this is done under sedation.
I hope you get answers and good treatment.
Good luck. ...Read more

I've been getting severe heart burns and acid reflux and now when I yawn or breathe in I get this sharp pain that starts in my abdomen?

GERD: Acid reflux, or GERD, is a very common cause of symptoms similar to those you're describing. If your symptoms have been persistent, you probably need to see a doctor for treatment. In the meantime, try an antacid such as Tums (calcium carbonate) or Mylanta, to see if it gives you temporary relief. You may need to follow anti-reflux measures and or be on medication to get this under control. Good luck. ...Read more

Gerd/abdominal pain: The bloating that you feel is worsening the acid reflux. I would eat very light for the next 24hrs, no dairy, no gassy foods or heavy foods. Make sure you have fully evacuated your bowels if possible and rest the bowels. If it continues to get worse, seek help from a doctor. ...Read more
