Headaches/Cerv disc: Persistent pain deserves an evaluation. Based upon age, I would suspect a disk herniation, or occipital neuralgia causing muscle spasm/tension. This may then create the muscle tension headache scenario. Nsaid's may actually cause headache in some. Try tylenol (acetaminophen). Pursue cervical pt. Dull Ache Neck: Hello. How far down your arm does your symptoms travel? Any history of trauma to your neck (falls, motor vehicle accidents, etc.). Would not expect narrowing around your spinal cord b/c of your age. It's possible that you could have some bulging pressure in a disc fueling your neck, shoulder, and arm symptoms. Possibly normal but?: In most cases it can be a pain which will persist for several weeks. The pain in the shoulder comes and goes so probably does not mean something bad but should gradually get better. If it persists then the area needs to be evaluated and need to see your Dr. Use heat and gentle range of motion with some NSAID like Ibuprofen if not contraindicated. Depends on the cause: It depends on why you have this pain. If its from excercise, you may need a good stretching routine. If its from hunching over a desk all day, it could be a question of improving your posture. For acute pain however, I have found heating pads with or without ibuprofen/motrin/aleve to be helpful.
