The muscle relaxer prescribed is not helping with the pain, can I take Advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) with the muscle relaxer?

The muscle relaxer prescribed is not helping with the pain, can I take Advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) with the muscle relaxer?

Probably: Commonly used "muscle relaxants" include cyclobenzaprine (flexaril) or benzodiazepams (Valium - Xanax (alprazolam) drugs). None of these should result in an adverse reaction with NSAID (Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) type meds. HOWEVER.... A good medical practice is to call the pharmacy where you got your prescription filled - ask pharmacist if any issues between ANY med you use and the muscle relaxant. Read more

Can I take tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil with blood pressure medicine? I was exercising and now I have sore muscles

Tylenol (acetaminophen): Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safer to take if you have hypertension since it has no effect on the kidneys. Advil (ibuprofen) and all other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can effect the kidney's production of prostaglandins which can cause a rise in blood pressure. Follow prescribing directions and avoid excessive use of tylenol (acetaminophen) since high doses can cause liver damage. Read more

What is the safest pain reliever to take for minor stress related muscle aches- Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil? Minor meaning as needed 1or 2 times week?

Depends: It depends upon if you have any other conditions. If you have liver disease advil is safer as tylenol (acetaminophen) can irritate the liver. If you have hypertension, heart failure, kidney disease or ulcers then tylenol (acetaminophen) is safer as it does not worsen or contribute to those problems. If you have no other problems then either one is safe to take occasionally. Read more

This: This question is posted under the OB section; if you are pregnant with those symptoms then you need to call your doctor and be seen immediately. Ibuprofen gives me an allergic reaction sending me to emergency, acetaminophen makes my asthma act up...What can I safely take for pain relief?

See an allergist: There are different types of allergic reactions to pain medications such as ibuprofen. One type of reaction causes an asthma attack and severe congestion. Another type triggers hives, especially if you have a history of chronic hives. Finally, you might have a specific allergy only to ibuprofen. An allergist can help you sort through the different types of reactions to see what options you have. Read more
