Can my 10 year old who weighs 155 pounds take an adult dose of tylenol (acetaminophen) if he has a fever?

Can my 10 year old who weighs 155 pounds take an adult dose of tylenol (acetaminophen) if he has a fever?

Yes: In this case weight is more important than age in determining dose. But i advise against taking anything to lower fever unless he is miserable, as fever is a key aspect of how our bodies fight infections- our immune system works better and bacteria ; viruses have difficulty surviving high temps. Reducing fever sabotages your immune system and prolongs the infection! treat discomfort, not fever. ...Read more

Is 2, 000mg of acetaminophen in one dose too much?

Is 2, 000mg of acetaminophen in one dose too much?

Don't do it again: This won't hurt or kill you, but you do need to show this helpful drug the respect it deserves. It's important to space the doses out so that you don't get sick. Up to 4000 mg/day is fine but you don't want to take even this much all at once -- you might overload the enzyme that processes it by the normal pathway. ...Read more

Can I give my baby adult medication like acetaminophen?

Yes, But!: But not the same dose. Must be age and weight adjusted to be safe. Note, the liquid tylenol (acetaminophen) for children recommends you ask your doctor if child is less than 2 years old, and so you should ask your doctor to help you adjust the correct dose for your child. I agree with dr. Lindor and katz that it is better not to adjust it on your own, and not to give an adult medicine to an infant. ...Read more
