Extremely rare: The current published data suggests that this side effect occurs in 1 of 10, 000 skeletally immature patients taking Accutane for acne. If you are 18, however, chances are that your physes are almost fully closed already. If you are under 18, a simple x-ray of your hand can determine whether your physes remain open and growing. Accutane & Growth: Growth arrest has been reported. However, it's very rare. There just isn't enough data to make firm recommendations about x-ray monitoring. I can tell you that it isn't standard practice to obtain such x-rays. As to how reliably predictive they are of side-effects is questionable.
My son is 15. I am concerned he has been taking 40 mg per day of Accutane for 3 months. Will it stunt his growth?
Severe acne?: I am assuming he has severe acne and is followed by Dermatology. They typically treat with accutane for 6 months at a time. I am assuming they reviewed the risks with accutane, I am not aware that accutane will stunt your growth, and most likely at 15 he already has had his growth spurt.See 1 more doctor answer
I took Accutane twice for six months each when I was fifteen and sixteen, I'm 19 now. I am shorter than my predicted height, did it stunt my growth?
Unlikely: Accutane is an oral form of vitamin a. The worst side effect for a pregnant female is defects in the development of the fetus. Other side effects can include night vision compromise, dry mucosa/skin, sunburn, nausea/diarrhea, headache, depression, fatigue, triglyceride elevation, aching joints. There is no reliable study that links compromised bone growth/height deficits to taking accutane.
I am taking Accutane and I am still going through puberty. Does taking Accutane stops growth hormones?
If you take Accutane for 6 months, does it have any effect on male penile growth? I.E. Hinder or stunt sexual maturation?
Accutane & hormones: Accutane does not interfere with sexual maturation.
My son is 14 is interested in taking Accutane. He has tried a lot of treatments prescribed by his dermatologist. Will this med stunt his growth?
Not if given & dosed: Properly! Should not worry, although it can rarely occur!
I'm 22 year old male. Took Accutane aged 20 for period of 6 months. Did it stunt my height (closure of bone plates) and stunt my penis growth?
Unrelated: Linear growth and penile growth are more or less finished by the age of 17 in most males & slowed significantly in others. If you went into puberty about the same time as your friends, it is unlikely that you would grow after 19.
Is Biotin safe to take as a teenager for beard growth, have a solid beard going at 17 but is patchy. I'm also on accutane if that matters. Thanks?
Safe but useless: Taking biotin is safe but it will not make your beard grow any better. Give your beard some time and it is likely to even out. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Accutane leaving scar tissue on my face resulted in no hair growth in that area of my face is there anyway to grow that hair?
No: Lack of hair growth within scar tissue is a sign that the hair follicles have been permanently damaged and replaced by scar tissue instead of normal collagen. There is no way to regrow the hair within scar tissue. Even hair transplant plugs do not grow well within scar tissue due to lack of adequate blood supply.See 3 more doctor answers
Pretty safe: Accutane has some issues, especially birth defects if taken while pregnant, but most of the other popularized "dangers" are significantly overblown. Still, it must be prescribed by a doctor with experience in its use, and you must join a registry (ipledge) as an added precaution against pregnancy.
Very good: Accutane is very drug useful for treatment resistant acne. However, there are several restrictions on its use. Patients need to be fully informed prior to taking the drug and agree to using at least two forms of birth control. This drug is not for everyone and can only be prescribed by physicians specifically trained in its use.
Depends: Its hard to say without knowing more about you. However, Accutane is an exceptional medication for treating cystic acne, with marked results seen. There are unfortunately side effects as well as monitoring to be performed, so it is best to check with your doctor to determine whether or not to start.
