The ABO system is the most important typing system in blood banking. The a and b antigens are long sugar molecules attached to the surface of red cells. People with type a blood make antibodies against the b antigen. People with type b blood make antibodies against the a antigen. People with type o blood make antibodies against both a and b. People with type ab blood don't make any antibodies.
