Abo Blood Groups (Overview)

ABO blood groups refers the unique molecules on the surface of red blood cells that help the body's immune system mark self and non-self tissues. The immune system of an individual without a particular molecule will develop a protein antibody that binds the molecule, marking it as non-self and for destruction.

Can you tell me in the ABO blood group, which allele is considered recessive?

Can you tell me in the ABO blood group, which allele is considered recessive?

ABO blood type: In this system of red cell antigens, O is considered to be recessive. Someone with type O blood would have two O alleles. People with type A blood can have two A alleles or one A allele and one O allele. Same with blood type B. This makes O the recessive and A and B are dominant. ...Read more

What type of personality traits are associated with ABO blood groups?

What type of personality traits are associated with ABO blood groups?

There are none: Blood groups have no relationship to personality, any more than one's zodiac sign actually does. During the 1990's, a single crook wrote a series of books claiming that blood group impacted general health, personality, best diet and so forth. It was totally made up. I'm sorry this came up. ...Read more

What to do if I'm a guy with Rh negative blood and my girlfriend is in the ABO group. if we were to have a child, would there be any problems?

What to do if I'm a guy with Rh negative blood and my girlfriend is in the ABO group. if we were to have a child, would there be any problems?

Blood type : Everyone has both ABO and Rh (+/-) factor. Like A+, or O-. The problems that happen with Rh- moms an Rh+ babies are prevented by giving mom a shot, called RhoGAM. That's the short version. If you are interested in knowing the details of how this works, check out http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/rh/ ...Read more

What are the long-term health effects of blood group incompatibility (rh or ABO problems) post transfusion?

What are the long-term health effects of blood group incompatibility (rh or ABO problems) post transfusion?

Only Rh: If there is no immediate adverse reaction to ABO incompatible transfusion, there are no long term effects. For Rh mismatch, it could result in developing antibody to Rh that would cause transfusion reactions in the future if given Rh positive blood to a Rh negative person if s/he received Rh positive blood. It could also put the Rh positive fetus of the Rh negative woman at risk. ...Read more

Random. how many blood types can a person have in the blood? The non-ABO types?

Random. how many blood types can a person have in the blood? The non-ABO types?

1 or 2: A person has her own blood type (that's #1) that she is born with. She may also have a second blood type from a transfusion (that's #2), but that second type is only temporary. In theory, if she has transfusions from more than one donor, she could temporarily have more than 2 blood types (especially if talking about "minor" blood type differences). ...Read more

27wks preg.My blood grp is o+ve and hus's is a+ve.Any problem to my baby becoz of this? I heard abt ABO imcompatibility. Is that a serious issue?

Nuscience not threat: ABO issues are more often a minor nuscience than a real threat. I remember giving a kid blood once after late anemia only once in 3+ decades as a pediatrician. If your infant is A+ (it might be O+) it might trigger mild issues that lead to more blood tests, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over the issue. I would put more time into staying healthy and sorting out how to deal with a newborn. ...Read more
