Abnormal Head Shape (Overview)

Abnormal head shape is most often caused by positioning of a baby that can't yet roll over easily. It usually resolves itself, despite a large industry in sellers of helmets designed to reshape the head. Rarely, changes occur that are bony and the helmets would not help these cases of abnormal DEVELOPMENT.

Can an abnormal head shape hurt my baby's brain?

Can an abnormal head shape hurt my baby's brain?

See below: It depends on what kind of abnormal head shape. If there is some mild flattening by lying on back, or in one position all the time, then there is probably no affect on the brain. If the abnormality is formed by the skull sutures fusing, so restricting the space inside the skull, then yes the brain can be hurt. Talk to your physician about which problem you are dealing with. ...Read more

Doc said Vit D deficiency & abnormal hormones can cause head shape to change. Can it cause the back of head to become higher than the front in adults?

Doubtful: this would require very soft bones indeed. A bone hromone problem taht severe would cause a lot of other problems. On the other hand PAGET'S disease causes more localized bone preoblmes often mainly in the head area. ...Read more

What if my older infant still has an unusual head shape?

Get an x-ray: If the head shape has not normalized by 3 months of age, skull x-rays should be taken to be certain that all of the separations ("sutures") between the skull bones are open. If they are open, the baby might be referred for evaluation for a skull molding helmet. If there is a question about the bones of the skull, a ct scan may be ordered to clarify the situation. ...Read more

Hello doctor, i always wondered why i flattened head shape on top, whether it's genetic or the result of a childhood injury? I have a very unusual for

Many reasons: Dr. Mandell described congenital causes of skull abnormalities. Other causes can be positional forces in infancy flattening the head. This positional plagiocephaly occurs when a baby doesn't move his head enough. Mostly it is a flat occiput. Invariably these conditions are benign with some notable exceptions. If you're well, then there is no need to worry. Cosmetics are something else entirely. ...Read more

What's is the average human head shape?

What's is the average human head shape?

Not Triangular!: Somewhat round or oval. There are variations of course. Certain cultures will purposely deform the shape of the skulls of infants at an early age to achieve a different shape. But there are minor variations in skull shape that are still considered normal. Certain birth defects affect skull shape too. ...Read more

Can high pressure on head, deform, dent or change head shape?

Can high pressure on head, deform, dent or change head shape?

Denting head ?: hello~ your question is not well crafted but I assume you mean pressure to the EXTERIOR of the skull. If so, external pressure can only change the shape of the skull if it is applied BEFORE the sutures in the pediatric skull have fused and by and large that means before 2 years of age. Anterior fontanelle is closed by about 18 months and the sutures fuse then too, so roughly by 2 years of age thx ...Read more

I have weard head shape i think it is scaphocephalia how can I correct it I am 17 years old?

When to see the Doc: I would believe, unfortunately, that this is a question that would be unanswerable in this simple forum. Your problem is one that must be seen. You may have a diagnosis, but this is not how medicine works. Your pediatrician or family physician should see you and address your concerns and worries. This problem requires direct examination. ...Read more

I just had a cranioplasty in the left side of my head, my head shape is abnormally shaped now. Will it return to normal?

I just had a cranioplasty in the left side of my head, my head shape is abnormally shaped now. Will it return to normal?

Most likely: This would depend on the nature of the cranioplasty. At this time, many of the bone flaps that are placed are made via computer modeling of a synthetic bone flap. These tend to fit very well and the abnormal head shape is likely from swelling of the overlaying skin/muscles which improves. If the cranioplasty was made from "bone cement", there may be some lumps and bumps that are seen. ...Read more

I always sleep on the right side so my head shape is changed the left side of my head is distorted is it posible to correct that?

No, it is not: However, some people see themselves as distorted, when in fact they are not. If others disagree with you, you may have body dysmorphic disorder which is where you see yourself differently in the mirror than other people see you. If this is the case, see a psychiatrist and get into psychotherapy as it may be very helpful for you. ...Read more

I hitted strongly top of my head and i had black out, so after 6 mounths I have feeling that my head shape is different than before 6m, is it possible?

Possible: You could have had a bone contusion which could cause new bone to grow over the area. This could cause some shape change but i doubt it would cause a significant change. If worried, see your doctor for further evaluation. ...Read more

Could my child have craniosynostosis if her head shape is normal but in the 10th percentile for circumference and a tiny soft spot?
