Not necessarily: The peer-reviewed literature on bracing after acl surgery states that it is not necessary. Nonetheless, many orthopaedic surgeons and patients "feel" better if a brace is worn. A early (6 week) postop brace is common, but much less common afterwards if the knee remains stable on examination. ...Read more
Whats the difference between a ACL and a pcl? I fell onto a driveway and slammed my knee into the ground. Can't seem to walk up or downstairs now.
Opposites: The anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament(PCL) serve opposite purposes. The ACL helps prevent the shin bone(tibia) from moving too much forward compared to your thigh. The PCL helps prevent the shin bone from moving too far backwards compared to your thigh. It's difficult to decipher the injury to your knee without being examined in person; seek in-person help. ...Read more
Not really: An acl brace has not been shown to prevent any rotation in the knee. It really only prevents stress on the mcl or lcl ligaments. A patient without an acl can still injury the meniscus and cartilage while wearing a brace. Furthermore, many braces inhibit the quad muscles, further worsening some symptoms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Talk to your surgeon: Brace use after acl reconstruction is still controversial. Both immediate post-op bracing as well as eventual functional "sports" braces have questionable effectiveness. Most studies show no improvement in knee stability, re-injury rate, or healing time or rates with use of a brace. I still use braces most of the time, however, because subjectively patients feel better with the extra support. ...Read more
Yes: As long as the brace is "comfortable" and gives you support then you should be ok. ...Read more
After having acl/mcl surgery how long should I continue to wear a knee brace while engaging in physical activity?
Ask Surgeon: This is a decision your surgeon should address since every case is unique. Only your surgeon knows how extensive the damage was and what had to be done to correct it. Some will recommend at least light compression indefinitely after the surgery while sometimes it is only a few weeks or months. ...Read more
I have now completed my pt and have full mobility in my knee with the repaired ACL but at times when i walk i hear cracking is this normal?
Knee injury wrestling, week later no pain bit of instability, can walk fine, coach thinks 2-3 grade ACL tear could that be possible without much pain?
Yes for sure!: Believe it or not, after a person tears their ACL most all the pain can resolve between 1 to 4 weeks. The initial pain is from the ACL tearing and bleeding into the knee in addition to bone bruises that occur. These all cause initial pain, but as the swelling resides and the bone bruises resolve, a knee with a torn ACL can essentially be painless. This is why some people put it off ......Mistake! ...Read more

Alright. So there is something wrong with my knee, and my mom don't believe it because I can walk on it. I need a way to hurt my knee a little more for her to realize I really am hurt. Any suggestions on how to fully tear your meniscus or acl?
Don't hurt knee more: Strongly recommend a thorough evaluation by a knee expert. Radiographs may be indicated, and if the examination dictates, an MRI may be requested to best ascertain the details fo any suspected injury within your knee. A meniscal tear usually causes pain locally about the actual tear, and an ACL tear presents with some variable form of instability or giving way (an inability to cut of injured leg). ...Read more
Exercise is good: You should only be limited by the pain or any instability of the joint so if instability present, don't lead with the affected leg and consider one step at a time but the exercise through all means is beneficial as is weight control to reduce load across the joints. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can complete tear of ACL be cured without an operation. By undergoing physiotherapy and using hinged knee brace?
ACL Tear: Cured no, asymptomatic yes. Therapy including strengthening of your hamstrings may give you a "stable" knee during activities of daily living. If you are still athletically active you may have instability moments during fatigue or certain motions which may put other structures of the knee at risk. Best to discuss all the options with your orthopedic surgeon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Possible causes in--: More scar tissue. Or another problem which you've had, in addition to the acl issue. Knee cap issues are very common in young girls and women. Are you having pain at all or is it just catching sensation? With no pain, i would suggest see how things go, and do nothing surgically but do pt. With pain, either get a 2nd opinion.
