Time: Presuming you are referring to an abdominal operation, I commonly hear from patients that their abdomen is swollen for weeks after the operation despite the fact that they don't look swollen to me. The patient however is a much better judge about their abdominal girth than me. What I do know is that it is common, and resolves without treatment. Severe cases may require more investigation however. ...Read more

Here are some...: As reported, your hubby had uneventful minimally invasive abdominal hernia repair - not specified; congratulation! Clinically and generally speaking, he should have no reason for avoiding flight 10 days after such procedure. But, for sake of safety, asking the surgeon, who knew the best detail and nature of the procedure, is the most reasonable thing to do. Best wishes to his health... ...Read more

Depends: It depends how long after gastrectomy. If the swelling happens a few days later, it can be due to infection or bleeding. If it's just mild swelling, sometime it is just due to bloated intestines. If the gastrectomy was several weeks or months ago, the considerations include ascites (abdominal fluid), a hernia, versus tumor regrowth. Talk with your surgeon to learn more. ...Read more

I have severe abdominal swelling since my supracervical robotic hysterectomy, I am 9 weeks post op and the swelling has not gone down too much. Why?
Uncertain: You will need to see your surgeon for an exam. Could be a hernia, but doubtful due that a hernia in a small port site would cause generalized swelling or bloating. Also could be bowel dysmotility, but this would be unlikely 9 weeks out. If you have already sen your surgeon and are not satisfied, seek a second opinion. ...Read more
