Gastro recommended CT and colonscopy for mild abdominal pain/gas. 23 yrs old. If CT scan shows nothing, is colonoscopy necessary? No bloody stools

Options available: CT scan of the abdomen may be indicated but not for mild pain alone. If the symptoms are progressive and there is concern for Cancer (unlikely in your age group), then only I would consider doing a CT. Similarly Colonoscopy is not indicated because of pain alone. If there is bowel irregularity or blood in stool Colonoscopy is reasonable to do. In your case I would watch /monitor for 4-6 weeks, then ...Read more

Gastrointestinal Bleeding (Definition)

A long tube runs from the mouth to the anus. It includes, in order, the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileus), caecum, the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon (or large intestine) and the rectum. The space inside that tube, the lumen, is considered to be outside of the body. When we bleed into that space ...Read more

Blood in stool: Many reasons for what you're describing besides leukemia. Since you already have GI doc, make sure you tell him/her about blood in stool. I'd be more concerned about inflammatory bowel disease in a young female w/abdominal pain & blood in stool. Or perhaps an ulcer. Diverticulitis much less likely. Night sweats & low fever also concerning for tuberculosis among other issues. Bottomline, talk 2 doc. ...Read more

I have a history of pancreatic nets. For past week I've had abdominal pain and a little blood in stool. Could this be a sign of the cancer returning?

It depends...: It depends on the stage of your cancer when it was diagnosed, how it was treated and how long ago. If it was an early stage like 1, fully removed with surgery and more than 5 years ago then it's unlikely. However, regardless of this you need to be evaluated by your doctor to make sure there is nothing wrong. Best wishes, ariel. ...Read more

Melena: Black tarry stool, otherwise known as melena, can sometimes be due to diverticulitis, but certainly can be a sign of bleeding in the upper digestive tract. You should share this new finding with your doctor and see if it affects her working differential. You may need tests to rule out an upper gastrointestinal source of bleeding. Good luck. ...Read more

My girlfriend has stomach pain and blood in stool. Can this be caused by not eating and drinking alcohol?

My girlfriend has stomach pain and blood in stool. Can this be caused by not eating and drinking alcohol?

Yes: Alcohol intake can cause bleeding in the intestine through multiple mechanisms. Alcohol is a poison and never did anybody any good. Your girl friend would be better served by not drinking. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.

Why do I have constipation, diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, and blood in my stool on and off? This started when I was 10. I'm 20 now.

IBS, other?: This is hard to answer without exam and some work up with labs, etc. However, it sounds like this could be IBS with fluctuating constipation and maybe some haemorrhoids that are causing blood in the stool. Hello doctor. I'm having deep pain during bowel movement. I also get belly pain and sometimes there is blood in stool. What can it be?

Pea size & on nickel size lumps right side stomach pain when I bend Ct scan negative blood test normal gas right side dull pain off and on I have ibs red blood in stool twice dr say hemrodes I get ultrasound Tuesday?

Good work up: With a negative CT, the lumps are likely just "skin deep" and a physician's examination is the next step to form a treatment plan or to gain reassurance that no treatment is needed. Ultrasound is the correct next step for the abdominal pain, although there is low likelihood that any disease process identified is particularly severe in light of the CT scan. Hemorrhoids will cause blood in the stool ...Read more
