You: You need to discuss the results of your pap smear with your doctor again so you better understand what was found. Sometimes a test is done with the pap smear to determine if the cerix is infected with a strain of hpv that would put you at a higher risk for cancer and sometimes a special examination of the cervix called a colposcopy is needed to double check the area. Thankfully, many, many women who have abnormal cells will not develop cancer. ...Read more

I had a Pap smear 2 days ago and I have been having lower abdominal pain since. I was spotting but not anymore. Pain mostly on right side and radiates?

Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain is complex as there are several organs in the pelvis. The ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, bladder, appendix, intestines, colon and rectum can all be the source. I experience abdominal pain and bloating. Could pap smear results ASCUS signify ovarian cancer and not only cervical? I have chronic HBV as well.

Pap smear: It would be unusual for Pap smears to reveal ovarian cancer. If you have chronic HBV there is new and highly effective therapy available, and since this condition can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma, and the inflammation from HPV on the cervix can lead to cervical carcinoma you should definitely go and be taken care of ASAP. ...Read more

Yes: You are perimenopausal. As such, you are anovulatory or oligo. This is problematic for many women because it becomes difficult to discern normal menses from abnormal. General rule is if you have intermenstrual or post coital bleeding at your age, you should get an endometrial biopsy. Cannot treat unless diagnosed. ...Read more

Is bleeding during a pap smear and tender cervix normal? Hi, I am 19 years old I have only had two sexual partners I have had lower abdominal pain which the doctors think is from my scar tissue. Today I had a pap smear and my gyno said my cervix was swoll

First: First of all your concern about cervical cancer is valid, given that your grandmother had cervical cancer. But, at 19 yrs old cervical cancer is not something to be concerned. The incidence is almost none to rare. In fact, as per new guidelines by health care leaders, pap smear should be started when woman is 21 yrs old. However there are other reasons why a pap smear was thought necessary before age 21. The most important thing for woman exam (pelvic exam) at your age is std screening and if woman has any menstrual problems or pelvic pain issues.

So, with the above information I provided, bleeding during pap smear if it is unusually more and if the cervix is very tender, I would recommend that you should get std screening. Infections with chlamydia and trichomonas can cause tender cervix, pain with intercourse and also can make it bleed easily. Sometimes, woman might not have typical symptoms of burning and vaginal discharge with chlamydia infection. Just that infection with chlamydia has long term implications on fertility and other complications, it is worth getting checked. My sincere advise is to use protection without failure any time to prevent stds.

I do want to provide you with some more information about cervical cancer and how to modify any risk factors to decrease your risk of cervical cancer in the future.

One of the risk factors that causes cervical cancer is hpv infection. But more than half of women of your age fight it off and get rid of it. Human papilloma virus is a infection that is transmitted sexually. This puts women at high risk for cervical cancer. There is a vaccine available to prevent the risk of getting high risk hpv from partners. At your age that is very well worth the cost to get the vaccine. It is a series of 3 injections over a period of 6 months. Please talk to your doctor for more information about risk factors for cervical cancer.

I hope this is helpful information to you. ...Read more

Light vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramps, very similar to my period (not time for period). I had pap smear done yesterday. Is this normal?

Ovulatory bldg: If the light bleeding occurs at about mid-cycle, it may reflect two eggs maturing at the same time, which elevates the estrogen level, and can cause withdrawal bleeding when the level falls just prior to ovulation. If this continues, see your gyn provider for advice. Oral b/c may alleviate this kind of event. ...Read more

Keep searching: Hi Irene,

The uterus increases in size as we age and have children. This is not concerning but rather what is expected. The stomach ache can be caused by quite a few things. Some very simple and some very serious. You all are on the right track with a physical exam and pap, but keep searching for the exact cause of the problem. ...Read more

When should I start getting a pap smear?

Age 21: New recommendations are that women start pap tests at age 21 and they should continue every three years during your 20s as long as they are normal. Lots of research has been done on this topic. No pap test should be done prior to age 21 because of the high likelihood of spontaneous clearance of hpv in adolescents and to avoid unnecessary surgeries for transient cervical dysplasia in young women. ...Read more
