Although heredity plays a major role, sun exposure and tobacco use & ...Read more

Had two big surgeries for melanoma. Had IV chemo and radiation. Now back. Non-localized in abdomen and left kidney. Chemo & radiation not option. Help?

Seek an opinion: From a university center or other cancer hospital. Have their "tumor board" review your melanoma treatment so far, and see what other options (hyperthermia, immunotherapy, different chemo, etc) are available. ...Read more

Hypothetically if somebody had melanoma on their lower back and had a CAT Scan of abdomen and pelvis 4 other reasons.Would melanoma show up on CAT?

It could: potentially show up on an abdomen/pelvis CT, depending on the size. There are no specific features of melanoma on CT, so, if small, it would look the same as the myriad of benign nevi, keratoses, cysts, etc... that are so common, and might not be mentioned as a relevant finding in the report. ...Read more

I have liver mets from primary ocular melanoma. I slept with a castor oil pack 2 days ago. My abdomen & lower right are painful. Will this subside?

I have liver mets from primary ocular melanoma. I slept with a castor oil pack 2 days ago. My abdomen & lower right are painful. Will this subside?

This is outside ?: Castor oil packs most likely do not do anything. I am thinking of the external application of the oil in cloth on skin. If there is heat, there could conceivably be a burn from the heat but any damage from it would be visible. ON THE OTHER HAND. Cancer everywhere can do bad and painful things. Without an actual examination, I cannot give specific medical advice on your particular health, ...Read more

Does a positive magea4 melenoma antigen gene suggest that I do have cancer? Ct of lungs clear. Mamaagram clear. Ct of pelvis and abdomen clear.

No one knows: Magea4 is an as of yet unproven tumor marker. I'm not sure why it was tested in your case. An elevated level does not mean that you have cancer. The test is simply not that sensitive or specific. ...Read more

How is melanoma diagnosed?

How is melanoma diagnosed?

Learn your ABCD's: Definitive diagnosis is made by biopsy. Melanomas are screened by the abcd's: a-asymmetry; b-irregular borders; c-different colors; d-diameber >6mm (size of pencil eraser). If you notice a mole with these characteristics, get it checked out asap. If you have a skin lesion which is growing, ulcerating, bleeding, or otherwise changing, get it seen as well for evaluation and possible biopsy. ...Read more

How long does melanoma take to spread?

Highly variable: There are aggressive fast-spreading cancers and there are slow-spreading cancers. An aggressive fast-spreading melanoma can metastasize even before it's visible on the skin. Some superficial slow-spreading melanomas may spread wide but not deep and may not invade the bloodstream for many months. The problem is there's no predicting how a melanoma is going to behave so early detection is key. ...Read more
