Will an xray of the rib cage appear different between bruised&fractured ribs and what would the difference be? Can xray show organ damage?
Yes and no: An x-ray can show a fracture of the ribs but will not show a bruise. However, rib fractures can be hard to see and may be missed. Which organ are you referring to? Organ damage is hard to see on x-ray depending on the organ. Lung damage can be seen but you will need a CT scan with Contrast to see Liver, spleen or kidney damage. ...Read more

Hi I had hit the side of my rib really hard last week and now it's swollen and hurts when I touch it should I get and x ray?
Probably not: A non displaced or mildly displaced rib fracture without complication (pneumothorax, hemothorax, pulmonary contusion) is not worth diagnosing. You will live with the same rib fracture pain for 6 weeks whether or not it is confirmed by radiography. Any worsening shortness of breath, go to the ED directly. That could indicate increase pneumothorax or bleeding into pleural space. ...Read more
