What Happens If Tonsillitis Does Not Clear Up After A Course Of Penicillin
Bacteria resistance: Tonsillitis can have different causes. Antibiotics are indicated for tonsillitis with a positive culture for strep. Some bacteria are resistant to penicillin causing antibiotic treatment failure. If the symptoms have not resolved after appropriate antibiotic therapy then re-check is indicated. Perhaps the cause is not bacterial. ...Read more
Sinus or reflux: Sinus or allergy drainage could be a common cause of mucus in the throat. Sometimes however, the perception of postnasal drainage is due to mild swelling from acid reflux. If over-the-counter allergy medications do not work, please see an ear nose and throat specialist. ...Read more
Nothing specific: This could be completely unrelated. Sometimes you may have a sore throat with a rash, either with a viral illness or strep throat (scarlet fever), but there is likely no significant relation to having a sore throat after a rash. In either case, if your symptoms persist or worsen you should be seen by your doctor to get a better idea what's going on. ...Read more
Is it possible if i only take clarithromycin for pneumonia for 3 days, the infection remaining clears up after that without antibiotics? Just asking.
Yes...but: The short answer is yes. But you should complete the course of therapy or return to your doctor if you don't tolerate it. You also run the risk of producing a partially treated resistant bacteria. Just take your medications as prescribed. The medications don't work in the bottle on the shelf in your bathroom. If you aren't going to take them, discard them appropriately. ...Read more
Several possibities: You were re-exposed and reinfected ( using the same toothbrush or kissing your asymptomatic partner can do this). You can also have another issue at the same time.Mono and strep can occur concurrently. Some people reinfect so easily that a 2 step treatment protocol using a penicillin drug followed by Rifampin is occasionally used. ...Read more
What does it mean when you wake up with a splitting headache?that happens to me about once a wk or so.its not sinuses, im on antibiotics,so what is it
Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea can cause morning headache. Do you snore? Are you tired? Are you overweight? A "splitting headache" could be migraine. Are you sensitive to light and noise with these? Being on antibiotics does not rule out sinus infection, but I would expect sinusitis to cause pressure that is not relieved until treated, not just in the morning. Evaluation by a neurologist or an ENT may help. ...Read more
How can you know if after child is taking antibiotics for 10 days that all of the bacteria from scarlet fever is gone. When to follow up with doctor?
Response: I'll assume the doc used a penicillin derived antibiotic. To this point we know strep a is universally sensitive to the penicillin drugs. We know that this treatment within 9 days of first sx of strep will stop the secondary complications of strep. Since this strep strain created a toxin that caused the rash, if the rash returns, u missed some (unlikely), or the kid was re-exposed & got it again. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How long does it take for a penicillin injection to clear up acute pharyngitis + ear infection . Does the injection guarantee to clear up my symptoms?
How long does it usually take for a lung infection to go? I've also just started a course of antibiotics
It depends: It all depends on what kind of lung infection you have. Something like pneumonia usually takes longer to recover from than bronchitis or a viral upper respiratory infection. If it is a bacterial infection and you just started antibiotics, i think you should start feeling better within 48-72 hours, although it may take 7-10 days for full recovery. (longer if something like pneumonia, up to 14). ...Read more
I still have a clear discharge 5 days after the 1g dose of Zithromax. How long does it take for symptoms of Chlamydia to stop?
A few more days: If "clear" discharge is an improvement (e.g. previously cloudy or colored), then no worries. It can take a week or more for chlamydia symptoms to clear entirely. Return to your doctor if it hasn't cleared after another week or so. ...Read more
What happens if I have gonorrhea of the throat (looks a lot like strep which I tested negative for), how long would that typically last without treatment?
If I take a single 2g dose of metronidazole for BV and it does not work will the bacteria become resistant? Should I try the week long course after?
Not likely: Gardnerella, the bacterium that causes BV shows very low levels of resistance to Flagyl. If the 2g dose was ineffective, the week long course could work better. Also, I don't know your situation, but being tested for STD's could also be appropriate, since many will cause the same symptoms. If your symptoms don't resolve, see your doctor. Hope this helps! ...Read more

If i get a sore throat the day after giving oral sex does it always mean an oral STD or can it be some type of sensitivity to the sperm ?
What happens if you discover that the infection is viral can you stop taking the penicillin before the 10 days have passed?
Nothing happens: If the infection for sure is due to a virus, stopping penicillin or other antibiotics won't be a problem, and of course would reduce the possibility of side effects from the antibiotic. But check first with the doctor who prescribed it, to be sure it's a virus without a superimposed bacterial infection. ...Read more

What to do if i ve been prescribed a course of doxycycline

Not at your age: The use of oral tetracyclines only stain the teeth if they are taken during the development of the teeth. Generally this is up to the age of 8, although it might be even a few years later depending upon individual development. At your age, it will not have any effect. ...Read more
