Hematocrit (Definition)

Of red blood cell number. Classically this was the "packed cell volume." blood was placed in a microtube and spun in a centrifuge. The rbcs settle to the bottom and one measures the height in the tube and reported as a percentage. Now determined by an automated machine. A typical hct is about 3 ...Read more

What does it mean if my hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCH and MCHC is low and my RDW is high?

What does it mean if my hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCH and MCHC is low and my RDW is high?

Need the numbers: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to know the actual values. It is likely that you have iron deficiency anemia which is common in menstruating women. Take oral iron and multivitamins.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex. ...Read more

What does it mean to have low hemoglobin, hematocrit, mch, mchc, and high platelet count , and sedimentation rate?

Hard to say. : This combination of labs doesn't make any diagnosis. The relative height of your esr, plates and HGB would be helpful. It may be that you have an anemia and that is driving up your platelet count and your ESR is outside your labs "normal, " but not really abnormal. ...Read more

Fasting blood work, RDW high 19.3 with RBC 4.81, hemoglobin 12.9, hematocrit 39.2, MCV 82. What does this mean? Trouble tolerating exercise and sleeping and tired, what's wrong with me?

What's wrong with u?: This laboratory data is not abnormal enough to account for your symptoms. You need a thorough physical exam and additional laboratory testing done to find out why you have poor exercise tolerance. Your post is a bit unclear - are you sleeping a lot or too little? I recommend seeing a functional medicine doctor to put it all together. Find one here: http://bit.Ly/11zdjeo. ...Read more

Hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutriphils high. What does this mean? Severe pain in knees. Feels like knife forcing the bones apart. Exhausted.

Abnormal hemogram?: Without further details, it is hard to pin this one down. At your age, I would ask for a complete CBC evaluation to rule out a myeloproliferative disorder. The knee pain may be related , or may represent a separate malady, including infectious and autoimmune disorders. You should consult your provider and ask for a more extensive work up to follow up on all the signs and symptoms you describe. ...Read more

Hemoglobin/hematocrit ratio is normally 1/3, what does it mean it if is more or less than that?

Hemoglobin/hematocrit ratio is normally 1/3, what does it mean it if is more or less than that?

Possible lab error: The crit is usually 3 times the hemoglobin. The HGB is measured, the hematocrit is calculated. If the red cells are not of usual size, or if something in the blood interferes with the measurement of red cell size and number, the ratio will be off. The hematocrit result will be suspect. The hemoglobin, since it is directly measured, will be correct. ...Read more

3 of 4 of my children have Low Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCV, MCVH....High RDW. I believe that affect their education performance and behavior.

Maybe, maybe not: The levels needed to interfere with performance vary with the skill set being reviewed. Many with minor hemoglobin defects have lower values than the norm for their lifetime and function quite well.Lead poisoning can also cause lower values, but it is the lead, not the blood cells that cause impairments. In short, your statement provides nonspecific data so a more specific answer is not possible. ...Read more

I'm wondering what could be the cause of my lab results as they all were high. Hemoglobin 15.5 leukocytes 11.2 erythrocytes 5.18 hematocrit 45.5%?

?Dehydration: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, If all the values are high, a usual cause is dehydration. None of the values are a cause for concern.

My Hemoglobin level was 11.3 and my hematocrit was 34.6 everything else was normal my question is does this mean I have lymphoma I'm so scared ?

Borderline: These values are borderline low but are not unusual in menstruating females who may be low in iron stores. Unless these levels have dropped significantly from several months ago, I would simply start taking daily iron to make up for monthly blood loss. However your physician is best to advise you about this and when to take another blood count. Not lymphoma. ...Read more

What could cause low MCV and high RDW but normal MCH, hemoglobin, and hematocrit for over a year?

How low?: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. If your peripheral smear is unremarkable and the MCV above 70, I'd forget the whole thing. My RDW is always high from donating blood. There are some variants of thalassemia minor that will produce this and puzzle people over a lifetime, though MCH is usually lowish. ...Read more
