What Kind Of Doctors Treat A Carotid Arteries
My doctor heard no bruits in my carotid arteries. Could there be any benefit, still, to an ultrasound of them?
Arteries are defined as blood vessels which carry blood away from the heart (to either the body or lungs). Arteries: higher pressure, thicker walls, stretch (pulse) with each heart contraction & deliver blood to the arterioles which control the flow to individual capillaries. Veins are blood vessels which carry blood from capillaries back to the heart (body to right heart; ...Read more
Will undergo an MRI of the aorta. Will the doc c all of the aorta from iliac to the carotid arteries? And will they c aneurysms of carotid arteris?
Maybe: Depends on the technique they employ. It is certainly entirely possible to accurately see the carotids if they include it in the field of view. ...Read more
Narrowing: "stenosis" means narrowing. Most commonly stenosis of the carotid artery is from atherosclerotic disease, or hardening and buildup of plaque within the artery itself. Atherosclerotic disease of the carotid artery is implicated in stroke and is best monitored by a vascular surgeon, who can easily follow the degree of narrowing by ultrasound on a periodic basis. ...Read more

My doctor heard something he did not like when he listened to my carotid artery? Is it the noise of clogged artery?
Neck bruit: Your doc most likely heard a bruit with the stethescope. A bruit is a sound related to turbulent flow. The next step in your workup is to review your vascular risk factors and get an ultrasound or duplex of your neck arteries. The issue is stroke risk. ...Read more

Doctors please advise. Is it ok to press your carotid to ck pulse if you have carotid artery disease?
Ok but: There is truly no association between pressing on the carotid artery and increase risk of stroke in my opinion except if the patient has more than fifty percent stenosis and he is symptomatic because in this special situation the plaque in the carotid artery can be friable and pressing on it can cause another attack. ...Read more

My doctor is sending me for a scan of my carotid artery he says this is just the normal procedure at my age which is 68. What will this test show and why is it given?
Trends: Non-invasive screening for peripheral vascular disease, and extra cranial stenosis, is becoming common, and may well be routine, as part of health maintenance and prevention. These studies are non-invasive, and conducted utilizing ultra-sound techniques. If a block of carotid is noted, this can be handled often by medication, and less often by a fairly safe surgery, to prevent a stroke. ...Read more

Feel like there is big knot in carotid artery feels swollen beats hard. Can't see doctor till Monday family won't let me go to ER?
Carotid body: Yes, that's a structure of the human body that serves as a sensor that makes sure the brain gets blood (and therefore oxygen). That beating you feel is the 'pulse' - and I assume you have a thin neck, which is why you can feel it so well. I don't think you need to go to the ER for that -- it would be a waste of your time. If you're still unsure, a regular appointment with a family doctor is OK. ...Read more

Not necessarily: Two points: carotid artery disease can cause an embolus stroke but onus lies on your doctor to proove that was the cause of ur stroke. Arrhythmia in a 76 yo often times more likely. Second, you ought to be on Asa + plavix (clopidogrel) + statin at a very minimum to prevent further strokes if from carotid, and effectuate plaque regression. See a cardiologist. Another ultrasound routinely not necessarily needed ...Read more
