Does visine have long term consequences?

Does visine have long term consequences?

Yes: Visine temporarily blanches the blood vessels on the white of the eye by constricting them. The effect lasts about 15-30 minutes at first, but with prolonged use it wears off faster. People then have to use the drops more frequently. Overuse can irritate the eye, does not treat the actual cause of the redness, and if too much of the chemical is absorbed into the body it may raise blood pressure. ...Read more

Can you please describe the best ways for getting rid of red eyes from long term use of visine?

Can you please describe the best ways for getting rid of red eyes from long term use of visine?

Stop the visine: The most common form of this eyedrops, "gets the red out", will constrict eye surface vessels which indeed whitens the eye. The problem is the eye hyperreacts and the red returns. You get in a cycle of drop application, and redness. Do not use this type of drop. Instead use drops which say eye lubrication or tear replacement. These are gentle and do not create this cycle. ...Read more

During: During the course of response to an infection the eyes will become red from dilated blood vessels responding to the inciting agent. Any use of drops to get rid of the red may at times irritate and burn the eye more on application and may have a contra-effect. I recommend using less irritating preservative-free artificial tears such as refresh to help improve the redness. This will be a slow but less irritating process. ...Read more

Can visine permanently damage the eyes? If I have a bad reaction to visine, could my eyes become permanently damaged?

Hello, Is: Hello,

is is very unlikely you would get permanent damage from any ingredients from an over the counter eyedrop. Make sure that the bottle is not contaminated though - see your eye doctor to make sure you don't have an infection or toxic keratopathy or conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye surface). You didn't specify the type of visine drop you used - but make sure you avoid it in the future and use preservative free eye drops.

Hope you feel better soon!
sincerely,
irina ganelis, M.D.
