Controversial: Yes I have heard about similar isolated reports but it is contradictory to previous recommendations to avoid needle sticks or any invasive procedures because of the increased concern of infections and problems healing. So at this stage it remains controversial. ...Read more

Yes: As part of vascular training, infectious etiologies of the vascular tree are covered. There are a number of vascular disorders that are cause by infections and some feel atherosclerosis in some part can be cause by an infectious agent. Arterial aneurysms can develop due to infections as well a pseudo aneurysms. Infections of arterial grafts are a major problem and are treated primarily by surgery. ...Read more

Difficult Question: Perhaps the easiest thing to do is to make sure the "vascular surgeon" you're seeing is one who is certified by the american board of surgery (abs) specifically in the specialty of vascular surgery. The abs also certifies surgeons in "surgery, " or what many of us call "general surgery." these are not the same as vascular surgery and you should pay attention when seeing someone. ...Read more
