For back pain relief, is it better to sit on an ergonomic office chair or a fitness ball?

For back pain relief, is it better to sit on an ergonomic office chair or a fitness ball?

If long periods seated at a desk are giving you a sore back, your office chair may need adjusting to give you better back support — or you may even need a new chair designed to reduce back pain: Sitting on a fitness ball for office work is not recommended. To stay upright on a fitness ball, you have to make constant, small adjustments in muscle tension and weight distribution. This effort helps you achieve the benefits of core-strengthening exercises performed with a fitness ball. Prolonged balancing on a fitness ball during a full day of work, however, may lead to increased fatigue and discomfort in your back. ...Read more

I have had back of knee pain for a few weeks, sore when straightening from acute angle and hurts most if a twist happens. Should I use a support?

Investigate why?: Sounds like it could be a Bakers cyst! These are knee fluid collection in a cyst behind the knee, likely as a result of trauma, wear and tear,i.e. A torn meniscus?, should get an MRI to better understand why this is occurring!A support may make it worse! Lower back pain around spine for 2wks. Pain eases off a little at times then it returns. Not taken OTC or prescription pain med. What can this be? Treatment?

28. Can a muscle strain or pinched nerve cause pain for months? Took a break from my fitness routine for a month and still feel it in chest/arm/back

Yes: When exercising did you feel a 'tear or pull' sensation? Is it chest or arm? Perhaps just persistent inflammation of a muscle/ligamentous structure, or nerve. Is it tender to touch? that would indicate a musculoskeletal structure, as opposed to in internal chest structure. Try stretching exercise, and Ibuprofen/naproxen OTC. If severe, or exertional, or associated w/ shortness of breath, see a Dr ...Read more

Surgeon reccomended a fusion for reherniated disc at l4/5 and grinding. Does this typically help just the leg pain or back pain too?

Great question: Typically, a fusion procedure (alif/plif/tlif) are most effective for radicular leg pain. If there is instability in the low back, ie) from fracture or spondylolisthesis, fusion may be effective in alleviating axial low back pain. In most cases, it is the leg pain that is improved, much more than low back pain. You can consult nass website for all indications for fusion procedures. ...Read more

For a week or two, I experienced a dull pain on my lower abdomen and this pain spread to the lower back (pelvic region) with a warm sensation. Stone?

Unlikely: Stone pain is excruciating, tends to radiate from flank to groin. Would wonder about ruptured ovarian cyst which would be more likely to cause this type of pain. Endometriosis would also be on the list as well as a host of other diagnoses. Best to see your doctor for evaluation if symptoms persist. Hope this was helpful. Best of luck. Dr R ...Read more
