Reducing and stopping elavil (amitriptyline) to see if my nerve pain from disc extrusion has eased or is just being masked. How long after stopping will I know ??
Not on your own...: Do not do it on your own. Stopping Elavil (amitriptyline) suddenly can give you significant adverse reactions which may include irritability, agitation, sleep disturbance, flu-like symptoms and, rarely, cardiac arrhythmia and should be tapered down with the supervision of the doctor prescribing this medication. ...Read more
Do i need to leave a gap between stopping 60mg elavil (amitriptyline) and starting 70mg lofepramine? Many thanks
I've asked a lot: of MD's this question. Some start you off on the new med right after stopping the old one. Some wait as much as two weeks. You are mixing an herb with a Tricyclic, so I'd play it safe and wait awhile. As a psychiatrist who knows about herbs. Most don't. ...Read more

Stop: You can stop it as the 12.5 mg is a very low dose and you should have few adverse symptoms. If you do get symptoms you could try the 6.25 a day or 12.5 mg every other day for 5-7 days. Be sure to notify your doctor of the problems you experienced with this medication. ...Read more
On saphris (asenapine) 5mg/night 2wks now, on elavil 100mg/d 1y. Saphris (asenapine) maybe to help w/sleep and anxiety. Carb craving intense after saphris (asenapine). How to stop?
Variety of causes : Antipsychotic compounds such as saphris (asenapine) are linked with weight gain and the causes can be multifactorial ranging from modification of stress response system to Insulin resistance. The best strategy would be to use minimally effective dose of medication and combine it with a regimented exercise (cardio) program. If this fails, switching to another agent may be useful. ...Read more
Why might my doctor stop prescribing me elavil (amitriptyline) even though i'm still depressed and in pain?
Other meds: Maybe the md decided to trial a different medication that also increases serotonin and mixing the two can be dangerous. My child just turned 3 months. I am exclusively breastfeeding But I started taking Elavil (amitriptyline) 10mg for bith my deppression and insomnia. I really do not stop breastfeedin 'n decided to continue. Okey????
Not the best : Elavil (amitriptyline) is one of the medications that will go into the breast milk if you are taking it. That means breast feeding while taking Elavil (amitriptyline) is like feeding tiny doses of Elvail to your baby. Please talk to your doctor and consider stopping wither the Elavil (amitriptyline) (and switching to something that does not go into breast milk) or breastfeeding. It is in your baby's best interest. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Insomniac/depressive just given 5mg saphris (asenapine) / night + 100mg elavil / day (taken for 1yr). Need to stop binge eating at nite. Would early dosage help?
Munchies: Both of these medications can give you the munchies. You didn't mention if you binge eat before or after you take these medications. Neither of these is fda approved as a sleep medication. Saphris (asenapine) is an atypical antipsychotic approved for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia - not insomnia. I would make sure I have a clear understanding from your doctor about your exact diagnoses and your rx. ...Read more

D/C it, or diet: Elavil (amitriptyline) often causes wt gain. If it could be replaced with another antidepressant, then have your md d/c it and replace it - but you'll still need to do some exercise to help lose the wt. If you can't d/c the elavil, (amitriptyline) then you have to be aggressive about wt management: watching caloric intake and doing vigorous exercise. In worst cases, sometimes an appetite suppressant is used too. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
